4th Gen Help, I'm confused.

4th Gen Help, I'm confused.
Hi. Basically, I'm a pokenoob. Heart Gold is my first proper pokemon game (other than mystery dungeon). I'm really confused on how to evolve my Kadabra. He is level 39 at the moment, I caught the Abra at level 10 and it evolved into a Kadabra. I read somewhere that you need to trade to evolve it...- scoped.apples
