Have you battled it? You gotta battle all the trainers inside and that'll unlock a secret base under the gym. You get your 8th badge down there.

Not until you get to Jotho, sadly. I think Whirl Islands if I remember correctly. Not much to do in that cave before that other than getting Lapras and Eiscue.

At least with the Spanish versions, the latest version was not compatible with the previous ones. I don't know if it will be the same with the translations, but considering some areas were added in the update, I'm assuming they won't be compatible either.
