Low 40s. You can beat higher level opponents in-game pretty easily. In the early game levels matter more, but after a certain point, playing by weaknesses and resistances gets the job done fairly quickly.

My WTF moment was when I first used my evolved Typhlosion? What happened to Typhlosion's back sprite? It's colored differently than it used to be and it looks like an alien Typhlosion or something.

My current team is Typhlosion, Aerodactyl, Heracross, Victreebell, Starmie, and Haunter. I'm keeping the Haunter because I like Haunter far better than Gengar, and since it's in-game I don't have to worry much about the stat disadvantage. Aerodactyl+Heracross were from trades.

Which is a bad thing, since at that point it has already forgotten Aeroblast, which is his signature move and IMO better than Ho-oh's.

Gold and Silver were the best games, in my opinion. It was that one stage where they really refined and improved the game formula substantially, but hadn't reached the point where the Pokemon had become too repetitive or formulaic.
