Today the US Military announced that it had positively identified the remains of Captain Michael "Scott" Speicher. Captain Speicher was shot down by an Iraqi SAM on January 17, 1991, on the first night of Operation Desert Storm. Initially he was listed as killed in action. However over the years his status was changed from killed in action to missing then to missing-captured.
In July 2009 an Iraqi informed US Marines based in Anbar province that he knew of two Iraqis that recalled an American jet crashing and the pilot being buried in the desert. Captain Speicher's remains were identified via dental records.
