This is just a theory I have on the anime. Contains a few spoilers if you haven't watched the Japanese Dub with English Subs yet(and the English Dub won't be out for weeks), hence I'm putting it in a Spoiler. Open at your own risk.
Spoiler:
The basis of the Sun&Moon games is for your playable character to face the many Trials and Tribulations of the Alola region. For the anime, Ash plays the role of the playable character but where the anime diverges from the game itself is with regards to the role of Trial Captains. While Ash is fulfilling his role as the playable character(and doing shall we say an embarrassing performance so far. Seriously... BW Ash wasn't this bad), the Trial Captains are undergoing Trials of their own and I think that will be the basis for Season 20.
Kiawe already passed his so his part in this season is to be a rival for those undergoing Trials. Lana's Trial unofficially began in Episode 28 with the PokeBase game(Lana's Home Run off Kiawe) and officially began in Episode 32 when she willingly took an untamed Stoutland and through sheer determination, reigned it in and got a Z-Ring out of it. Now the next trial is overcoming a Totem Pokemon(in this case Wishiwashi) wherein she get's her Water Z-Crystal. Mallow and Sophocles are sure to undergo their own Trials in later Episodes. I suspect Mallow's will be something along the lines of having to find ingredients to make medicine for a critically ill person or Pokemon and then battling a Grass Totem for hers. Haven't quite surmised what Sophocles' Trial will be yet but it will probably be something corny and stupid(but eh what do I know).
The problem I have with the writing so far is that Lillie's Trial, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the Season, is being forced upon or shoved in our face on Episodes where the spotlight is on someone else(like in the latest Episode or 32). I have no clue as to how many Episodes or Seasons they will have of Sun&Moon but rest assured that the first Season will all be about Trials(for Ash and the other Trial Captains). Lillie's ultimate Trial will come soon enough involving her family and Aether Foundation and that will be in Season 21 at the earliest.
Plus there is Team Skull, who's presence in this show is very underwhelming compared to past Team Organizations(so far anyway) and then Lillie's brother Gladion and the role he will play. Feels like he's going to play the Alain role from XY series as a strong rival who will be manipulated by Aether Foundation to do unspeakable things but have a Redemption moment. Overall I think they got enough material to do 2 Seasons, but considering how much filler they've had so far... they probably could get away with 3.
