  • Chapter 1

It was a quiet night when the shores of Pallet Town were heard from the ears of a young Squirtle and his Pokemon trainer, Kai. Both looked out into the ocean with a smile smelling the fresh breeze. When Kai knelt down to Squirtle's height, he saw a wild Magikarp flopping on the shallow shore.

"Hey! Look, Squirtle!" Kai said, pointing to the wild Magikarp. "Let's check it out!"
"Squirtle, squirt!" Squirtle called out, smiling at Kai.

When they both walked toward the wild Magikarp, Kai saw it looked weak. It was when he picked it up with all his strength, looking around to see where to go to. When he remembered Professor Oak's laboratory, they started running toward it. It was dark out, so they didn't know what to do. Kai looked down at Squirtle with a confused look which made it shrug its shoulders as it didn't know what to do either.

"Okay, Squirtle, let's go home and hope for the best tomorrow," Kai said. "I know it doesn't look like the greatest Pokemon we've seen, but it's worth a shot."
    "Squirtle!" Squirtle called.

Both started to walk toward their house quickly before anyone could see them carrying an uncaught wild Pokemon. When Kai opened the front door and saw his mother cooking dinner, his stomach growled. Squirtle laughed when it heard Kai's stomach, but its stomach growled as well.

"Okay, bud," Kai said, putting the wild Magikarp in the kitchen sink. "Let's give you and this Magikarp some dinner."
"Squirtle! Squirtle!" Squirtle called, smiling widely.

Kai opened the kitchen cupboard and grabbed a jar filled with Cheri Berries and Chesto Berries. Setting both jars down on the counter, his mother laughed as she didn't see the wild Magikarp inside the kitchen sink.

"That Magikarp is too big for the kitchen sink, so put it upstairs in the bathtub," his mother laughed.
"That's right, I forgot that a Magikarp extends its body over time," Kai said. "If the bathtub's big enough, maybe Squirtle could join, too."

When Kai grabbed the wild Magikarp and walked upstairs with Squirtle close behind. The three went into the bathroom, and Kai turned the nob to let the water out. While pouring water into the bathtub, he let Squirtle and Magikarp play together. It wasn't much playtime since the wild Magikarp could only flop around, making both Kai and Squirtle laugh.

"You're hilarious, Magikarp!" Kai said, laughing out loud. "You may be the weakest Pokemon ever now, but I can feel your potential."
"Magikarp!" Magikarp called, splashing around inside the bathtub.
"I can see a lot of potential between you," Kai said, looking at both Magikarp and Squirtle.

Both Magikarp and Squirtle cried out loud in happiness, making them feel loved. When the bathtub was filled with water, Kai turned the nob to turn it off. Seeing Squirtle and the Magikarp play together happily, Kai nodded as he knew fantastic energy was in the air. When he heard his mother ring the dinner bell, he rose from the floor and walked out of the bathroom.

"I'll be right back, guys," Kai waved to them. "Maybe Squirtle can tell you a story about us so you won't be so lonely, Magikarp."
"Squirtle! Squirtle! Squirt!" Squirtle cried happily.

Kai walked downstairs and saw his mother setting the two plates in front of her, quickly sitting in front of the table.

"So, how's the Magikarp doing?" his mother asked, wondering. "Tomorrow's your chance to register yourself for the Indigo League. You have extraordinary skill, and you're wasting it."
"I know, mother," Kai said. "However, wouldn't it be wrong if any member like us participated in such an event?"

His mother stopped eating and looked at Kai, thinking about the multiple members of the Indigo League as gym leaders and professors.

"Surge, Sabrina, Blaine, and even our boss are a part of the Indigo League," his mother said. "So, don't tell me that you can't participate."
"If so, why do I get a Squirtle and save a Magikarp?" Kai asked, thinking about the Indigo League more.
"Our boss can reward us Pokemon for what we do," his mother answered. "So, feeding those berries to your Pokemon will grant you a guarantee from Blaine, our Pokemon professor."
"I thought Professor Oak would be my professor since I wasn't accepted into Team Rocket yet?" Kai asked.

His mother laughed, getting up from the table to walk to the video phone. Clicking a single button, the video phone brought Blaine, Team Rocket's Pokemon professor, onto the screen.

"Yes, what do you want? It's late in the night," Blaine asked.
"My son, Kai, has found an uncaught wild Magikarp, and I want him to participate in the Indigo League tomorrow," Kai's mother answered.
"A Magikarp, you say? Did he scan it to see what nature it is?" Blaine asked.
"He suspects it's an Adamant-natured Magikarp which would be a very suitable Gyarados," Kai's mother answered.
"I see," Blaine said, thinking with his chin up in the air. "Well, with his gifts, he'll truly become an excellent breeder for us. So, if he really wants to be a part of Team Rocket, he would have to look alike."

Kai rose from his chair and walked toward the video phone, looking at his real Pokemon professor, Blaine.

"I'll send over a Pokedex and five Lure Balls, Dive Balls, and Net Balls," Blaine said. "Being a specialist in Water-type Pokemon at the beginning of his career is interesting."
"So, who's really going to be my starter Pokemon?" Kai asked. "This Magikarp does have a lot of potential."
"If your skill is correct and the Magikarp is Adamant, then use one of the specialty Pokeballs I'm going to send over to you," Blaine said. "I'll send over a few more items for your travels."
"What kind of items, professor?" Kai asked, wondering.
"They're called Rare Candy," Blaine answered. "Use them wisely, however. I need to rest now, so good luck tomorrow when they arrive."

Kai hovered over his mother and hung up the video phone, so he could tend to Magikarp and Squirtle. Walking upstairs and into the bathroom, he saw the two happily playing. The moonlight shining through the window worried him about his Pokemon friends, Magikarp and Squirtle. He also stressed that joining the family business would be a disaster for him and the world. So, he quickly grabbed a pillow from his bedroom and placed it on the bathroom floor, resting his eyes in front of his Pokemon.

  • Chapter 2

The following day, Kai woke up when his mother walked into the bathroom to see a mess with water all over the floor. When both of them looked at the wild Magikarp splashing around in the bathtub, Kai laughed in embarrassment.

"I guess that's what we get for not putting them in Pokeballs," Kai said, continuing to laugh.
"You're just in luck because your packages have arrived from across the ocean," his mother said. "Here's your Pokedex and special Pokeballs Blaine sent you."

Kai's mother threw one of the Dive Balls, and when he grabbed it in mid-air, he threw it at the wild Magikarp.

"Okay, Magikarp! You're officially mine!" Kai shouted, throwing the Dive Ball.

When the Dive Ball smacked the wild Magikarp on the side, making it hit the bathroom wall, it opened up and transferred the wild Pokemon inside. It quickly shook three separate times, and the middle glowed a red light.

"If I remember correctly, it's officially mine now," Kai said, looking at his mother.
"Now, you must clean this up before you begin your own Pokemon adventure," his mother said. "You may be my only child, but don't make me go over there and smack you a new one."

Kai laughed, looking down at his Squirtle as it stuck its tongue out at his mother.

"Well, one person doesn't like the water cleaned," Kai said. "So, go tell her off, Squirtle!"
"Okay, do you want a hard lesson? I'll show you," his mother asked. "If you win a Pokemon battle, I'll clean up your mess; if I win, you have to clean the entire house."
"Okay, let's go to the shore and battle then," Kai laughed. "Let's see if my own mother is stronger than me."
"You better watch it, young man," his mother said, walking away from the bathroom.

Kai and Squirtle followed her downstairs and out of the house, looking at the Sun on the horizon.

"Okay, you asked for it," Kai's mother said, grabbing a Pokeball off her trainer's belt. "Go, Bulbasaur! Let's show teach him a lesson!"
"Okay, Squirtle! Let's show mother what we can do," Kai commanded.

Bulbasaur was a mismatch, making it look like his mother had already won the Pokemon battle. Squirtle wasn't his only Pokemon now, as he also had Magikarp.

"Okay, Bulbasaur! Let's use Vine Whip!" Kai's mother commanded.
"Let's use Bubble, Squirtle!" Kai commanded.

Squirtle ran as fast as it could toward Bulbasaur, but it wasn't fast enough as Bulbasaur's Vine Whip smacked it hard. It was such a brutal hit that Kai saw Squirtle was already weakened, but it didn't stop him from forfeiting.

"Let's go, Bulbasaur! Finish it off with Tackle!" Kai's mother commanded.
"Okay, Squirtle! Use Tackle!" Kai commanded.

This time, regardless of Squirtle being slower than Bulbasaur, both Pokemon hit each other simultaneously. Again, Kai's mother saw Squirtle barely hanging on as it looked weaker than before. She knew he was stubborn but didn't know he'd do anything to win.

"Let's go, Bulbasaur! One more Tackle, now!" Kai's mother commanded.
"Let's use Refresh, Squirtle!" Kai commanded, pointing towards the ocean.

It was a smart move to use as Kai's mother was the one who gave the Squirtle egg to him as a gift. However, as Bulbasaur chased after Squirtle to Tackle it, Squirtle stuck its tongue out at Bulbasaur.

"Did you forget, mother? I hatched this Squirtle from the egg you gave me," Kai asked, laughing. "Use Tackle, Squirtle!"
"So, you want to play it that way, huh?!" Kai's mother asked with a grin on her face. "Go, Bulbasaur! Use, Petal Dance!"

It was over for Kai and Squirtle as magical petals emerged from nowhere surrounding Bulbasaur. When the petals flew toward Squirtle, the attack brutally hit it. Being knocked out of the battle, Kai grabbed one of the Dive Balls from his belt and threw it at Squirtle.

"A good job, Squirtle," Kai said, smiling. "Now, let's see what kind of magic Magikarp can do!'

When Kai sent out Magikarp, it splashed around the shallow shore, making him and his mother chuckle. He knew it would be over in a single hit from Bulbasaur's Petal Dance, but he gave it a shot anyway.

"Let's go, Magikarp! Let's use, Tackle!" Kai commanded.
"Let's use Petal Dance, Bulbasaur!" Kai's mother commanded.

It was over before Magikarp had a chance, as Bulbasaur's Petal Dance brutally smacked it. Kai knew deep down inside his heart it was for the experience because he loved to battle, but he was also competitive. Looking at his mother, he closed his eyes and nodded his head with a smile.

"Magikarp has a lot of potential, and when it becomes a Gyarados, you'll see its hidden strength," Kai said.
"You're talking like a true Pokemon trainer, son," Kai's mother said. "However, it's in our blood to hit everyone with all we got."
"A Sassy Pokemon like Squirtle already has that covered, but you chose Bubble and Recover instead," Kai's mother said. "So, that's the advice I'll give you. Strike them and give no mercy."
"Okay, I'll do just that," Kai said, smiling as he held the two Dive Balls in one hand. "I'll go on my way now and make you proud, mother.

Kai remembered that he had to clean up the bathroom mess since he lost the battle, but he talked himself out of it. He was now on his way to Viridian City, but just before he entered the grassland, he heard someone's voice behind him. Thinking that it was his mother, he turned around and saw that it was another boy with a Charmander.

"Hey kid, you have a nice-looking Charmander," Kai said. "Do you mind us having a Pokemon battle?"
"Of course, we can have a Pokemon battle!" the boy shouted excitedly.
"Okay, it'll be a one-on-one Pokemon battle," Kai said. "So, give it your best shot."
"Okay! So, let's bring it on!" the boy shouted.

Kai knew battling the boy would be the first win under his belt, holding onto Squirtle's ball. When he focused on the boy's Charmander, he closed his eyes and took a deep breath. When he calmed himself from the boy's fiery energy, he threw Squirtle's ball without a word. When Squirtle came out of the Dive Ball, the boy smiled as it was a strong-looking Squirtle. When they were about to call their first attack, Kai closed his eyes to focus on what move to call out first.

Kai was about to call Squirtle's first attack, but the boy suddenly took off his hat. Suddenly, the boy had long red hair that was wavy like a girl's, which made him feel strange. Then, suddenly, she winked at him, taking off her jacket.

"Okay! Now we're ready!" the girl shouted. "Let's go, Charmander! Use, Ember!"
"Finally!" Kai shouted. "Use, Bubble, Squirtle!"

Charmander exhaled an Ember attack much faster than Squirtle using Bubble, but the Bubble extinguished the Ember quickly. Since Charmander was a Fire-type Pokemon, it got hit by Bubble harshly.

"Isn't that a strong move against Charmander!" the girl shouted. "Let's turn it up a notch using Metal Claw, Charmander!"
"Finish it off with another Bubble, Squirtle!" Kai commanded.

Charmander was faster than Squirtle again, running as fast as it could toward Squirtle. However, as Squirtle's Bubble attack hit Charmander, it fainted in front of Kai and the girl.

"Wow! That was such a steaming battle!" the girl shouted, putting her hat back on her head. "The name's Ashley, by the way."
"You surprised me there," Kai said, returning Squirtle to its Dive Ball. "My name's Kai."
"So, are you from Pallet like me?" Ashley asked, returning Charmander to its Pokeball.
"I am, and I'm a Pokemon competitor wanting to become a professor," Kai answered.
"That's awesome! Are you going to collect all the badges and compete in the Indigo League then?" Ashley asked, starting to walk north toward Viridian City.

Kai started to walk with Ashley as they continued to talk to each other, looking at so many wild Pokemon around them. Then, Ashley found a wild Pidgey in the middle of the road and got excited to see it.

"Do you know what kind of Pidgey it is, Kai?" Ashley asked, looking at him.
"Just by looking at it, it looks pretty Naive," Kai answered, looking at Ashley.
"Okay, but Charmander needs to heal. Can you help me catch it?" Ashley asked with a pouty face.
"Of course, I can help," Kai answered, laughing as he threw Squirtle's Dive Ball.

When Squirtle came out of its ball, it saw the wild Pidgey in the middle of the road.

"Okay, Squirtle! Let's weaken the wild Pidgey so Ashley can catch it," Kai said, looking down at Squirtle. "So, let's use Water Gun!"

Ashley carefully watched Squirtle use Water Gun on the wild Pidgey, seeing Squirtle spray a massive attack. Then, when Ashley saw that the Water Gun weakened the wild Pidgey terribly, she threw a Pokeball at it. Both watched the Pokeball shake three times, and each shake excited Ashley.

"Alright! I got a Pidgey!" Ashley shouted excitedly. "Thank you, Kai!"
"You're welcome," Kai said. "I'll do anything to help out."
"Now I got two Pokemon on my team," Ashley said. "How many Pokemon do you have, Kai?"
"I have two Pokemon like you," Kai answered. "Before my journey, I found a wild Magikarp on the shore."
"Oh wow, that's awesome," Ashley said, continuing north.

When they entered Viridian City, they quickly entered the Pokecenter, which made them relieved to see as their Pokemon were weak.

"Hello! Welcome to the Viridian City Pokecenter," the nurse said. "Do your Pokemon need healing?"
"Yes, please," Ashley answered. "I needed my friend to catch a wild Pidgey for me because my Charmander was too weak."
"Okay, it'll take a while," the nurse said. "So, you can go for a walk, and when you come back, they'll be ready."
"Okay, we'll be back then," Ashley said, smiling at the nurse before walking out.

When Ashley and Kai walked out of the Pokecenter together, Kai quickly saw the Pokemon gym nearby.

"Okay, it'll be a while, so I'll check out the Pokemon gym while you go to the Pokemon academy nearby," Kai said. "It'll help you out a lot."
"Oh, okay then," Ashley said. "I guess we'll meet back here at the end of the day."

Kai didn't want to tell Ashley that his mother was a Pokemon Breeder for Team Rocket, watching her walk toward the Pokemon academy across the street. So, when he saw a clear path to the Pokemon gym behind the Pokecenter, he ran toward it. Running as fast as he could toward the Pokemon gym, he saw a Team Rocket grunt standing in front of the door.

"Look at it here. It's Kai from Pallet," the Team Rocket grunt said. "If you're looking for your grandfather, he's out on business."
"On a business trip again?" Kai asked, wondering.
"Yes, but he left you a Pokemon and a message," the Team Rocket grunt said. "So, this is how you get free Pokemon instead of catching or stealing them."
"A Pokemon gift for me?" Kai asked, wondering while he grabbed the Pokeball.

Kai threw the Pokeball and saw it was a giant Onix, making him wonder what the message from his grandfather was.

"He wants you to start breeding and training Ground-type Pokemon like him," the Team Rocket grunt said.
"I can see that," Kai said, looking up at the giant Onix. "I'm definitely starting it now."

When Kai returned Onix to its Pokeball, he saw it was a special Pokeball called Heavy Ball.

"Okay, so when my grandfather comes back, tell him that we're going to begin breeding and training Ground-type Pokemon," Kai said, smiling as he looked at his new Onix.

When he returned to the Pokecenter to meet Ashley, she was happy to see him return. Both smiled when they walked back into the Pokecenter to see the nurse holding up a tray with their Pokemon.

"It wasn't that long of a healing process," the nurse said, smiling. "But, here's your Pokemon fully healed and ready to go."
"Thank you for healing our Pokemon," Ashley said. "Now, it's time for Pewter City."
"You two are going to Pewter City to challenge the gym leader, huh?" the nurse asked, wondering. "Well, you two must cross the Viridian Forest first. It's just north of here."
"Okay, thanks for the tip," Ashley said.

Ashley and Kai walked out of the Pokecenter and started north of Viridian City, looking at the forest in front of them. When Kai saw the Sun slowly going down the horizon, he was worried about Ashley seeing his emotional side. However, there was a more significant reason his grandfather wanted him to start breeding and training Ground-type Pokemon. Ashley pointed at the sky when they continued walking north, just outside the Viridian Forest. It was some sort of flaming bird Pokemon going west toward the Indigo Plateau, making them believe that it was a good sign for them to keep going.
