Hello there! I'd like to welcome everyone to this class! While none of you have asked for it, it's still here anyways! (hah)

What is Illustration?

An illustration, as a noun, is an image! Basically.
Not very interesting? Yeah, the part that I want to teach is Illustration as a discipline.
Doing Illustration means making images that convey a message. While you can also say many art forms convey messages, illustration is a little bit more practicial in it's application. Illustration in most cases is paired with text. In this way, your image must follow a number of specifications

  • Where it's going to be displayed.
  • How it's going to be displayed.
  • Representing a text or author's intent.
  • The audience you are trying to draw in.

Among many others others. Common jobs within the illustration feilds call for children's book illustration, book cover illustration, editorial illustration, advertising illustration, and package illustration.

An illustration is made to 'sell' something else, either literally or figuratively.
In magazines, an article is places next to an illustration, and the illustrations purpose it to complement the article as well as draw visual interest for someone to read it in the first place.
An illustration in a magazine that is in an advertisement wants to actually sell you their product.
Illustrations on packages are not only there to sell you the product, but sometimes are also there to help guide you in using the product.

There are many things that can be taught for illustration, but the biggest step is learning how to create art for someone else's needs.
