    Mirage Rebellion

    Little by little
    The illusion falls
    Little by little
    Reality fails

    Prologue:

Millions of years ago, on the seventh year of the Pokémon world.

"I AM YOUR SON." A black dragon roared as he felt the chains made of pure light tightened in his body, crippling his mighty form. His wings were already losing their dark radiance and his own pure aura had stopped radiating from his golden braces surrounding his head and neck. "HOW CAN YOU DO THIS TO YOUR OWN SON!?" The dark dragon continued yelling.

"You did this to yourself. You aim to destroy my creation. You brought chaos and catastrophe in my world." An equine said as he floated in the air above the dark dragon. The equine had a golden wheel-like structure surrounding his body that was glowing furiously like the chain binding the dragon. "You harmed you brother and sister. You must be stopped." The equine continued in a morose tone.

"MY SIBLINGS ARE WEAK!" The dark dragon said angrily. "YOU GAVE THEM THE POWER TO CONTROL TIME AND SPACE, THE REALITY ITSELF BUT ALL THEY DO IS PLAY." The dragon continued as he struggled pointlessly to free himself in the chains binding him.

"You are the one who is playing." The equine said.

"I AM STARTING A CHANGE. YOUR CREATION DOESN'T DESERVE YOU. IT DESERVES ME."

    Then silence.

"I'm banishing you to the Distortion world." The equine announced, breaking the silence. Fear suddenly made its way to the dragon's face upon hearing the equine's words. "If you want my creation, then a piece of it you will have."

"YOU WON'T" The dragon said as the chains binding him glowed brighter. Light engulfed the entire body of the dragon and a gigantic crack slowly emerged in the sky. Time stopped and space became unstable. Behind the crack was nothing but darkness. Only plain darkness. The equine's eyes glowed red as eighteen different colored stones plates emerged from the wheel in its back. Each one of the plates flew and encircled the dragon while it was ascending towards the anomaly in the sky. "ARCEUS! I WILL REMEMBER THIS DAY AS THE DAY YOU DENOUNCED ME. BUT I WILL COME BACK, YES, I WILL COME BACK AND WHEN I RESURFACED IN THIS WORLD AGAIN, DARKNESS SHALL FALL!" The dragon shouted with all of his remaining power. Every words he spoke pierced the air and the reality itself. Something that the equine tremendously felt.

Arceus remained silent and when the dragon had entered the crack, his plates flew back towards him. With the dragon on the other side, the crack closed and there was a burst of light that touched every corner of the Pokémon world. Time started again while space became even.

"Giratina." The equine said to himself. "When you return, I'll be long gone."

  • Chapter 1:

"Name. Age. Hometown." A fat, bossy lady said to me from behind a transparent glass with a circular hole in the middle.

    "Sorry?" I said.

"What is your name? What is your age and where are you from?" She said in an irritated tone. "You seriously didn't get that?"

I actually did. I just wanted to annoy her a little and funny how it worked. "Kyle Cast. Seventeen years old. Vermillion City, Kanto Region." I said as the lady typed it in a computer in front of her.

"From Kanto?" She said as she started to print a paper out. "What are you planning to do here in Hoenn?" She asked or rather... mandatorily inquired. I hated her voice. So bossy.
"I'm here for a vacation." I lied. The lady ripped the paper from her printer and gave it to me. I grabbed it from her hands and immediately left her presence. "Next!" I heard her shout.

Hoenn region. I never thought that I would be invited here in this tropical region filled with trees and mountains and trees again and mountains again. Wait, I heard there were also a volcano and a dessert. Anyway, I was invited, yeah, by someone named professor Birch as his official assistant. It was a long story but to make it short, my mom knew him because he was an acquaintance of her friend who was also a Pokémon professor in Kanto so when she found out that he, professor Birch, was searching for an assistant, my mom immediately 'nominated' me and five months later, I found myself in a ship sailing from Vermillion City to Slateport City where I was currently standing.

The place was nice. There was a beach on the south side of the city where countless of people were currently enjoying themselves and a flock of Wingull was flying around the entire place, well, flocks (with an S). On the west side was the market place wherein half of the stores were selling over-priced goods, obviously taking advantage of the booming tourist population and on the east side of the city, a museum was standing. I loved the museum! I even saw a replica of the long lost SS Anne inside.

According to a text by Professor Birch himself, his son was already on his way to pick me up. I already visited almost all of the interesting places in the city so I decided to wait for him in the Pokemon center with my best pal, Poli, a Poliwrath. Compared to other Poliwrath, Poli never seemed to frown but he was always smiling. Well, I wasn't really sure but Poliwraths was always supposed to frown, wasn't they?

Later on, while I was feeding Poli her favorite PokEBar, a boy around my age entered the place. He was wearing a white hat that literally looked like a hair in a distance. He made his way to Nurse Joy and they talked for like ten seconds then, Nurse Joy pointed her fingers at me. I pretended that I didn't see her pointing at me simply because I didn't really want to stand up and greet this newly-arrived boy first, who I assumed (because of the hat, according to my mom) to be the son of Professor Birch, and besides, I was feeding Poli. Another besides, I didn't want to possibly be embarrassed since I was only assuming that it was him.

The boy made his way to me and greeted me with a smile. "Kyle Cast?" He asked me in a very confident voice.

"Yes." I replied. "That would be me."

He offered his right hand and I shook it. 'So formal', I said to myself.

"The name's Matthew. Professor Brendan Birch's son." He introduced himself.

"I'm quite aware of that." I said.

    He laughed. "Of course."

Then silence. An awkward silence. I knew I had an awkward tendency in the presence of other people, something that I should probably fix sooner or later if I really wanted to be a famous Pokemon professor.

"So..." He finally broke the silence. "Let's go."

I called Poli back to her pokeball first before I stood and went with Matthew. We made our way to the Pokemon center parking lot where a green, roofless jeepney was parked. A jeepney... seriously. I expected something more, like a fancy car or even a helicopter. Okay, the helicopter was a little out of the line but he came from an adventurous family so I guessed them having a helicopter was a huge possibility but then I realized that a roofless jeepney was also adventurous-ish. Whatever. Matthew positioned himself in the driver sit while I sat in the passenger sit beside him. I insisted to sit in the back but he told me that sitting in front would be more comfortable and just after a half an hour of travel, I found out why – the floor of the vehicle had a little possibility of collapsing and by little, I meant about 60% out of a hundred percent.

"What's it like in Kanto?" He opened up a conversation. Thanked Arceus!

"Well." I started. "It's less ocean and more land there."

He laughed. I could see why.

"But seriously. I think Kanto is overall 'noisier' than Hoenn."

"I agree to that." He said. "I once visited Kanto with my father just a year ago. My father attended a conference that talked about the mirage spots. Stuff like those."

"Yeah." I was waiting for him to continue speaking.

"It was a week-long conference so while my father was busy with his conference, I took a little trip and almost everywhere I go, people where... I dunno... so 'alive'. Saffron was full of people running around the city while Celadon was so colorful. Vermillion was so classy, if you know what I mean." He looked at me and smiled. "Too many rich people. Cerulean was okay and the Lavender town, creepy!"

"What about here in Hoenn?" I asked. "Any point of interest?"

"The entire region is a point of interest." He said.

"If I'm really into trees, mountains, and a volcano, yeah, I guess you're right." I joked. "And islands. Don't forget the islands."

    He laughed again.

"Hoenn is famous for its flora and fauna. The nature's beauty, it's called." He said. "But if you really like to have 'fun', I recommend going to Mauville City."

We talked for another hour about random stuff like how he got in trouble while visiting Vermillion. He had an argument with someone named Veronica (who was a friend of mine but I didn't tell him that part) and how he was forced to battle her father, Lt. Surge, that ended up with Professor Birch rushing to the Vermillion gym to 'rescue' him. "Lesson learned. Never throw a Voltorb in the sea." He told me.

    I laughed.

We passed through the very famous Hoenn Cycling road and into an old abandoned house that had a 'Wondrous Trick House' written on a sign on top of it. "When I was still a child, like five or six years old, my father always bring me in that place." He said as he pointed at the old house. "It was a very fun house full of tricks and treats."

    "What happened to it?"

"It closed down after its owner, the Trick Master died. Sad day for the entire Hoenn, believe me."

Passed the trick house was a lengthy bridge that connected Route 103 to, well, the other side of route 103. Route 103 was divided into two by a body of water. Matthew told me that during his father's time, there was no bridge there and people were forced to swim or Surf just to get to the other side of Route 103 then to a town called Oldale near Littleroot. It was a well-used shortcut because without that bridge (and if you don't know how to swim), in order to get to Littleroot from Slateport was either by sea via a ferry or by land where you would basically travel almost the entire north-western Hoenn.

We stopped for a moment in Oldale. It was almost sunset and I became a little anxious because I hated travelling at night especially in a roofless vehicle. Matthew went inside the one of the houses while I waited in the vehicle, listening to the radio. Hoenn had a weird range of radio channel. It didn't take long before Matthew emerged from the same door and he was already carrying a sketchpad.

    "What's that?" I asked.

"I honestly don't know." He replied. "Father just asked me to pick this up." He continued. Out of curiosity, we opened the sketchpad and there was nothing inside. Nothing was drawn in any corner and in any page.

Matthew started the engine and we continued our way to Littleroot town. While travelling route 101, I saw dozens of Poochyena running around and playing with the countless Zigzagoon in the field. A group of Wurmple was also present in the trees and in the grass. I begged Matthew to stopped the car because I wanted to catch a Wurmple and evolve it into a very beautiful Beautifly (I loved the rhyming) but he insisted and told me that I could just do it the next day. I argued a little but then I realized he wasn't listening to me. Suddenly, his jerk side manifested. Great!

We arrived at Littleroot at exactly seven in the evening. Matthew threw the door of their house open without even knocking and inside was a picture of a perfect family. There was a man in his late forties (who I assumed to be Professor Birch) sitting in the sofa with a ten years old girl wearing a red bandanna. They were watching the television while in the kitchen table just behind the sofa, a woman who was also in her late forties was preparing dinner. They all greeted Matthew as we entered the place and then they shifted their attention to me.

"Hello Paps" Matthew greeted his father and approached her mother to give her a kiss on the cheek. He then went into the comfy chair beside the sofa and he gestured his hands towards the other chair lying next to him which I interpreted as a sit-here gesture.

"Is he the Kyle you're talking about?" The little girl asked.

The man smiled. "Kyle Cast, isn't it?" He looked at me.

    "Yes. Professor."

"I am looking forward to work with you."

    "So am I." I smiled.

Matthew's mom called us for dinner. I hesitated at first in joining them since I wasn't even a part of their family but they all protested. I sat beside Matthew and enjoyed the meal in their presence. They talked about stuff that I could sometimes relate into but most of the time, not. It was Hoenn matters, why should I even care. Okay, starting now, I would start to care since I was already living in the region... I guessed.

After dinner, Matthew escorted me to my room. It was a little, simple room with a bed, a lamp and a desk. I opened the lamp and released Poli in her pokeball when I was already alone. Later, I realized that a thick book entitled 'Cracking the Mirage' by Wallace was lying and on the cover of it was a note saying 'Read the first few chapters. – Prof. B.'.

Professor Birch was really dead serious in his research, wasn't he?
I got a little annoyed since instead of letting me rest in my first night here in their house, he already gave me a... assignment. What was I? A college student? Lucky for him, I wasn't annoyed enough so I did read the first few chapters and by first few chapters, I meant half of the entire book.

"We shall see what Hoenn can give us." I said to Poli who was already sleeping in her portable pond. (Yes, I had a portable pond just for her.) I retired in my bed and let my mind and body rest even just for some few hours since it was already four in the morning when I fell asleep.

  • Chapter 2:

I was awakened by four knocks in my door. Then it was followed by another four then another four before I finally rose from my bed and opened the wooden door. Outside was Matthew with his hand ready for another set of knocks. "Good morning. Breakfast is ready." He told me.

"Noted" I said as I closed my door and prepared myself to look more… appealing. I wasn't really planning to be seen by other, with Matthew as an exception since he already saw me, in my frazzled pajamas. I changed into my usual me clothes, a jeans and a simple, single colored shirt. Without any particular reason, I hated colorful clothes. Today, I was wearing blue. I called Poli back inside her pokeball before going out of my room and when I opened the door, Matthew was still there, waiting for me.

"Let's go." He told me. I didn't really expect him to wait.

We made our way to the dining room/living room where Matthew's mum and sister were already sitting around the table. Professor Birch wasn't with them and then, Matthew told me that the Professor was already in his lab and was already waiting for me so I immediately got this panicking feeling like I was already late for work. Well, being a professor's assistant could already be considered as a work, couldn't it?

"But don't worry." Matthew told me. "Paps wasn't really strict when it comes to time."

'A good thing or a bad thing' I wanted to ask him but realized I probably shouldn't.

I ate breakfast with them. Half of me was urging me to rush my food and the other half was telling me to enjoy it and I ended up following the former. After I finished my meal, I stood from my seat and thanked Matthew's mum for the food and before I could leave the house, the television that suddenly flashed 'Breaking News' caught my attention.

"This is just in." The reporter said. "Steven Stone had officially stepped down from his place as the Hoenn League Champion and left the League half an hour ago. According to him, he wants to focus more on managing their family business in accordance to his father's death wish and being a League Champion is a huge disturbance for him. Later today, he will be officially granted the title President and CEO of Devon's Corporation in a ceremony that will take place in Rustboro." The reporter continued. "We have here one of the Elite Four for more." He said as he gave the microphone to a red-haired man in an office-like attire.

"Steven's retirement is both a good thing and a bad thing." The red-haired man said. "A bad thing because the league just lost its toughest and strongest trainer but on the other hand a good thing because it only means that another mighty trainer will be known. Let us not be saddened by Steven's retirement but rather, we must be more encouraged and excited for it means that a new era in the Hoenn League is coming."

"Thank you for such uplifting words, Elite Four Maxie." The reporter said. "That's all that we have for this moment but stay tuned for more information about Steven Stone in the following hours."

And that was what I would call 'Hoenn matter'!

"Even Steven had come to the end of his reign. I guess things really are changing now in Hoenn" I heard Matthew's mother said. "How I miss the old times."

"Kyle." Matthew called me. "Wait for me. I'll escort you in pap's lab." He stood from his sit and gave his mother a kiss on the cheek and muffled his sister's hair. He went in his room first where he grabbed his white hair-hat and we left the house.

Littleroot was so… little. From Matthew's house where I stood, I could already see the edges of the town. There were only a little number of almost identical houses that was lined up horizontally in a total of six rows. The entire town was quite literally surrounded by dozens and dozens of trees and in the northern side was an opening, which I believed, lead to Route 101. Well, I would also admit that Littleroot was hundred times quiet and peaceful compared to Slateport and specially Vermillion. We walked past the neighborhood until we reached an all-white dome-like building surrounded by more trees!

Before we entered the building, Matthew grabbed a hat from his bag and gave it to me. "Take this." He said.

"And this is a...?" I asked.

    "A welcome gift." He replied.

    "Why?"

"Uhmmmm." He mumbled. "A friendly gesture."

Oddly enough, for someone who just met someone last night, Matthew was being so friendly to me. Was all Hoenn-borns liked this? I took the hat and examined it. It was black hat that had a letter K written in the front. I wore the hat and if fitted in me just fine. Upon looking at Matthew, I saw a smile that quickly hid itself in his face. Then, the door in front of us opened and Professor Birch emerged holding the same sketch pad that we got from Oldale last night.

"Morning boys." He greeted us and we greeted back. "Kyle." He called me. "As my new assistant, can you please hold this for me and basically follow me wherever I go." He told me and gave me the sketchpad. Professor Birch was too straightforward and I kinda liked it, honest.

We went inside the laboratory and the interior of the place looked like no laboratory but rather a library full of books and shelves and desk filled with papers and mess. Tons and tons of mess. Professor Birch told me to put the sketchpad in one of the table while he grabbed a bottle with a colorless liquid from one of the shelves. Matthew was still with us. "Watch this." He told us as he dropped a bit of the colorless liquid in the paper. Upon the contact of the liquid in the paper, a picture of a Gardevoir emerged in the surface of the paper. I awed in amazement.

"This is called a mirage paper." Professor Birch said. "A special kind of paper made in a wood of a tree that can only be found in a mirage spot. Amazing, isn't it?"

"What about the water?" I asked. "What is it?"

"This is just an ordinary water in a fancy glass." He said.

Oh. I was expecting for like a mirage water or something.

"That's what we are going to study and find out." He said. "The secret of the Mirage Spot. What are they? What are their secret? Their importance! Or are they even important? We are going to crack this anomaly!" He continued enthusiastically.
I found the professor's enthusiasm contagious because even I got excited and wished that we could already find the answers for his questions as early as, I dunno, maybe tomorrow.

"Did you read the book I placed on your desk?" Professor Birch asked me.

    I nodded.

"Good. Today, I wanted you to go to Lavaridge." He said. "But don't worry, my son Matthew here will go with you." He continued as he placed his hands on Matthew's shoulder. "He will be your official Hoenn tour guide."

    Matthew smiled.

"You'll meet with someone named Asul. Just tell her I sent you two and she'll know what to do."

"Wait." I said. "Today. Like, right now?"

    "Yes." Professor Birch said. "Why?"

    "Nothing. It's just that…"

"Don't worry." Matthew joined the conversation. "We're not going to walk. We're going to fly."

Professor Birch nodded. "Oh. Before I forget." He suddenly said. "Nice hat." He continued as he pointed in my black hat.

Professor Birch dismissed us and Matthew told me to prepare my things. He said that we were also going to spend the night in this town called Lavaridge since travelling at night in the sky was never a good idea. And besides, we also needed to make the two Salamence that we were going to ride rest. We didn't want to be reported in the International Pokémon Welfare Committee, obviously.

I stuffed some of my clothes in my travelling bag and immediately went to Matthew who was petting the two Salamence in the Laboratoty yard. It was my first time riding a dragon and I wasn't sure whether I could do it or not but I was was sure in only one thing, I knew it would be fun since when did riding a dragon never fun?

Matthew helped me in climbing th dragon's back. "Don't be nervous." He told me. "Morphy here won't let you fall, right, Murphy?"He said as he petted the dragon's head once again.

"I'm not nervous." I said. Actually, I was.

Matthew smiled. "Take him up, Murphy."

Upon hearing Matthew's command, Murphy immediately lunged into the air and stayed airborne with his strong wings flapping simultaneously. I felt my stomach turned outside down first but soon got the hang of it, flying with a dragon. With the roar of the breeze whispering in my ears, I let the wind danced around me as I felt the sun rays comfortably touched my skin. I never felt so... relaxed. Matthew followed in the air with his own Salamence named Turphy.

"Next stop, Lavaridge!" Matthew announced as we flew towards the horizon.

  • Chapter 3:

The sun was passed its peak when we first saw a piece of the all famous Mt. Chimney. It was releasing this large amount of black smoke from its crater and I found myself pretty amused about it since to be honest, it was my first time seeing an actual volcano. I ordered Murphey to go nearer the crater but I didn't really expect him to obey since before we flew, I heard Matthew whispered to him that no matter what happens, he (Murphy) shouldn't listen to me. Something that Murphy completely planted inside his dragon head.

We landed on the rooftop of a Pokemon Center. The Lavaridge Pokemon Center was a little unusual and odd compared to the other center due to its hot spring styled design and if the Poke ball design on its rear was removed, I would had never thought that it was a Pokemon Center.

"Good Afternoon." A man in a nurse outfit greeted us. "We have been expecting you. Professor Birch told us that you two are coming."

Matthew gave him a nod while I smiled at him. He called the two Salamence back to their Pokeballs and the man escorted us inside the Center. When we reached the main lobby, Matthew gave the two dragons to Nurse Joy for a proper rest. We continued walking until we reached a room that would be our place while we were in the town. The room was so... traditional. The floor was made of wood, well, everything was made of wood like we were inside a Hot spring hotel or something. The place was.. boring but I would admit that it was also nice, at least nice enough to be considered comfortable and accommodating.

Matthew tossed his bag on his wooden bed then threw himself next on the same place while I walked towards my own designated space. "So, where are we going to meet this Asul?" I asked.

"Somewhere near the volcano." He replied.

"Let's go, then." I said after I unloaded some items from my bag.

He stayed silent and faked a snore. "At least let me rest for an hour or two." He groaned and released a big yawn. "We just flew from Littleroot. Aren't you even tired?"

Now that he mentioned it, I realized that I was also tired. I let myself fell in the comfort of my bed and it took only a few moment of silence before I finally entered my dream consisted of… well… I think my dream was quite private to be shared.

Then four knocks disturbed my sleep. "Room service." A feminine voice called. I rose from my bed and proceed to answer her. I opened the door and a girl with a blue hair greeted me. "Hi! Name is Asul." She said.

    "Sorry?"

"You two are Professor Birch's associates, aren't you?"

    "Yes." I answered.

"Okay. Wake that Birch up" He pointed to Matthew. "And let's get down to business. "

"Wait. Sorry but we are supposed to meet you at Mt. Chimney."

"I got a little excited." She said. "So wake your friend up and I'll wait for both of you at the cafeteria." She continued as she made her way out from my sight.

I argued no more and proceeded to wake Matthew up. I stood beside Matthew to take him out from his dream world when all of the sudden, he grabbed me towards him with his right hand. I fell to his chest and I heard him laughing. "What is that for?" I said as I rose up. "Not funny, Matt."

"I know, sorry." He said. "So, that's Asul."

"Yes." I agreed and realized something. "Have you been awake the whole time?" I asked him.

"Yes." He replied. "Let's go at the cafeteria." He continued as he rose from his bed.

We left our room immediately after a little chit-chat about what could Asul have for us. We found her sitting in one of the round tables in the cafeteria with an entire meal ready for the three of us. Besides her was possibly her Pokemon. It was a well-groomed Zigzagoon wearing a blue ribbon on her neck, the kind of blue that matched Asul's hair. She raised her hands and gave us a 'over here' hand gestures when she saw us entering the place.

"Hi." She greeted us. Matthew and I greeted back as we sat on the chair beside here. "So, you must be the sleeping dude earlier, Matthew Birch, isn't it?" She looked at Matthew.

"Yes. That will be me." Matthew agreed.

"And you." She turned at me. "Who are you and what's your importance?"

Importance? I wanted to strangle her to death when she asked me that. "The name is Kyle, Kyle Cast." I introduced myself… as friendly as I could "Professor Birch's new assistant."

"Okay. Let's get down to business. Please feel free to eat since I know both of you are starving right now." She pointed at the range of food on the table in front of us. "So, we are here to talk about the mirage. Do any of you have any idea why Professor Birch suddenly into mirages?"

"Because he is curious." Matthew said.

"Exactly! But not quite. These past few years, mirage spots are becoming… active. More active. No one knows exactly why or what is causing it but some says it is a sign of danger. One of those 'some people' is Professor Birch. I shouldn't be the one explaining this part so just ask the Professor about his theory when you get back to Littleroot." Asul started.

I would admit that I was still filled with skepticism while listening to Asul. Maybe it was because we only just met and she hadn't even introduced herself fully and yet, here she was, speaking like she was someone who was on the same level as the Professor Birch, the regional professor. I was skeptic but Matthew, on the other hand, was only eating and seemed not to care at all. Usual Matthew… I guess.

I wanted to ask Asul who she really was but I decided to let her finish talking first. After all, Professor Birch sent us to her so I believed she was someone to be trusted… and listened to.

"As of now, the Professor wants to prove his theory and to possibly explain and crack the secrets of the mirage spots and in order to do that, he needs… to collect some things and that is where you guys will come in." He continued. "In the very depth of Mt. Chimney lies a thing called Griseous orb… well… only a shard of the Griseous orb"

"And paps wants us to collect it, doesn't he?"

"Exactly. You can start tomorrow morning. Night time is never a good time in the Jagged Pass and Fiery Path."

"Are you coming with us?" I asked.

"Nope. It's spa day tomorrow so…"

    Really? Spa day? Really?

Our meeting with Asul ended with her taking a grand exit from the Pokemon Center. Two man in classy suit emerged from the wooden door of the cafeteria and fetched Asul like she was a princess or something while a limousine was waiting for them outside As it turned out, she was the daughter of someone called Lisia, a legend and once the number one contest star in the entire Hoenn.

    __________________________________________

It was almost nine when Matthew forced me to take a walk with him around the volcanic town. At night, the town was more peaceful and quiet and all I could hear was the silent howls of different Pokémon from the forest nearby. On the sky, the stars were all out, shining magnificently to illuminate the dark horizon like Cresselia herself was giving them the radiance they had. The silhouette of the smoke coming from Mt. Chimney could also be observed lingering in the dark of the night.

Among all the places, it was still the Hot Spring besides the Pokemon Center that was active the most. People were coming in and out from the place and it seemed some was already planning to stay in there forever.

"Follow me." Matthew whispered to me as we exited the town and went to the forest where the silent howls of different Pokemon started to become not-so-silent.

"Where are we going?" I protested. I wanted to go back to the Pokemon Center but looking at Matthew, it seemed my choices were either I would go with him willingly or he would tie me up and drag me to wherever we were going. "It's not safe here at night." I argued

"I know. Don't worry, we're almost there." He said. He grabbed me by my hands and we kinda dived towards a pile of vines hanging from a gigantic tree. I heard a faint tearing-like sound and wooden thump then I found myself inside a not-so-crowded place full of old furniture covered with dust and various Pokémon posters hanging on the wall.

"Where are we?" I asked Matthew.

"A secret base." He answered. "My father's secret base."

    "A what?"

"Secret bases." He repeated. "It's a trend here in Hoenn during my father's time. Trainers who's travelling are allowed to build their own base, or portable home as my father describes it, in dents on trees or caves all throughout the region as long as they are not violating any Environmental rules."

"What about now? Is it still a thing?" I suddenly wondered.

"Well. Things have changed. Are you aware of the Groudon and Kyogre crisis roughly thirty years ago?" He asked me. "Two continental Pokemon basically tried to kill each other in an epic fight while the entire region is being submerged into water. Half of Dewford had suffered the consequences while Sootopolis was wiped out from the map. After the tragedy, people became scared…"

"And?" ." THE tragedy. I was quite aware of what it was. We studied it in history during my short school years and it was a complete sad day for the entire Pokémon world. Tears were uncontrollably shed when a handful of life was taken…

"People became weary and anxious, expecting that something bad will happen again so most of the parents had forbid their children to go in an adventure and the Hoenn-born trainers population dropped by almost 70% and without the trainers, who do you think will build these bases?"

"Oh… so… why did you bring me here?" I asked. I wanted to change the topic since I was never a fan of tragedies and talking about them made me feel unease.

"We'll spend the night here." He said as he started to dust off some of the things inside the place with his feather duster that came out of nowhere, Seriously, where did he get that?

"No!" I protested. "I will not sleep here!"

"Why not? This will be like… camping."

"I hate you." I said to him. I didn't know why but no matter how much I wanted to protest and run back to the comfort of the Pokemon Center in Lavaridge, I just couldn't. Something about Matthew was making me stay and I hated it.

    In the Evergrande city…

"Steven is out." A man with a weird hair-cut said from his seat. With him was another man with a red hair and was wearing a very clean red suit with a small M on its sleeve. Another was a woman wearing a violet dress and the last one was also a woman wearing an Alola-inspired clothing.

"That's quite obvious, Sydney." The woman in Alola clothing said. "Thank you for pointing it out."

    "Shut up, Phoebe." Sydney said.

"Maxie." The woman in the violet dress called. "What should we do?"

The man in the red suit faced the other three from his seat. "We need a new Champion, immediately." He announced. "As we all know, the Hoenn Champion is a symbol of strength and protection, something that we have already proved after THE disaster I partly caused." He paused. "Without a champion, people will be scared."

"Are you suggesting that one of us should assume the title?" Sydney asked.

"Not necessarily." Maxie replied. "Not necessarily."
