3rd Gen Problem with Pokemon Fire Red

I'm trying to continue Fire Red from where I left off, but whenever I move my character the game keeps moving the direction I moved him even though I'm not pressing anything. Then VBA freezes (I can't click anything but the character keeps moving) and my computer slows down unless I restart it.
Is there any way to fix this?
