  • So, let's talk about how some English dub versions of the Japanese Pokemon characters are changed or different.

For example... did you know that trainer Melissa from the Kanto League arc was male in the Japanese version of the anime? Makes you wonder why they'd change the character from male to female...

& Kasumi, who is Misty in the Japanese version, was much more violent in the Japanese anime, going from slapping Satoshi (twice) to literally ramming Takeshi with a log...

I've also heard various other things that I can't remember right now at 1:30 in the morning.

Censorship, really. Gotta make everything as vanilla as possible and Americanized with 4kids.

And for gender changes, again, censorship. Especially early in the 90s and for children's shows, gays were a no-no.

They did the same thing with Sailor Moon back then. Lots of times, actually.

Basically, censorship when dealing with anime that is aimed at western children gets overly edited to high hell.

Let's not forget she's the pokemon version of Bulma, as she nags a lot and is consirded the xxx symbol of the anime https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAm1GMNgqEQ

But i liked Kasumi/Misty more than Bulma

Makes you wonder why they changed DB's Puar's gender from male to female in the english dubs thought

Must've been his voice but heck, his voice is manly in some dubs

Cilan and Dent aren't mentioned in the thread yet, despite being the thread title. What?
