Could different gens be romhacked to be fully compatible with each other?

If you've been around Pokémon for a long time, you remember how much it sucked to know that Gen 3 was not compatible with the older games.

Now that those three gens have been carved open, is it theoretically possible to update them via romhacking to allow full connectivity (maybe even expanding the Pokédex or the movelist in the older games), or at least Time Machine-style trades?

    Just a showerthought.

IIRC the reason gen 3 couldn't trade with gen 1/2 was because the voltages used by the GB/GBC mode and the GBA mode are different, so it's impossible to get them to communicate. Can't remember where I heard that, probably GBATEK. It may, or may not also be the case that in GBA mode you're not able to use the link cable in a way that could communicate with a GB/GBC (e.g. it might send data too fast, or interpret the pins to mean different things).
