So we know that in the Pokemon universe, every living thing (Apart from some plants, and of course the humans), are all Pokemon. So if the Pokerus is in fact a living virus, wouldn't it also be considered a Pokemon of some kind?

And just to expand on this for discussion, if they made a new class of 'virus' Pokemon, what would they be like?

Would they be like some kind of item Pokes could hold for some effect? Since they would also be a Pokemon as well, maybe they would have some different way to level up, boosting whatever effect they had as a hold item over time?

Just some thoughts for random discussion, what is your take on this, if anything?

The descriptions for the Pokevirus aren't scientifically accurate: "Your Pokémon may be infected with Pokérus. Little is known about the Pokérus except that they are microscopic life-forms that attach to Pokémon. While infected, Pokémon are said to grow exceptionally well." Viruses cannot be seen with a microscope and are not alive so this doesn't make any sense.

I think the Pokevirus isn't a species of pokemon, cause it's not alive and is a strand of genetic material designed to invade cells. Even if it were alive in the Pokemon world, it's far too small to be a Pokemon, a human cannot see a virus with the naked eye.

Wouldnt the pokemon zygarde, cell form kinda help support that it could be pokemon on that level? since pokemon did go a route with cells as an official pokemon.

Or would you say that pokemon are more like just our animal in our world, more supporting that its just a regular virus?

From the Bulbapedia description of Deoxys:

"The DNA of a space virus underwent a sudden mutation upon exposure to a laser beam and resulted in Deoxys."

Also, you're dealing with a fictional world where they have some crazy tech that we don't have, who's to say that electron microscopes aren't commonplace in that world? And you definitely can examine viruses with those. :P

Regardless of that speculation, I still think of the idea of a Pokemon doubling as a hold item would be interesting. They would have to put a cap on it though, so you can't have a Pokemon holding a Pokemon that's also holding a Pokemon, and so on.

One avenue for it could be one that has the effect of one of those EV power items, and the amount of extra EV's it gives depnds on the Pokemon's levels, like maybe 5 stages from lvl 1 to 100, so the EV boost would be 2, 4, 6, 8, then 10 max, or something like that.

My headcanon is that Pokemon is not a biologically relevant category, but a culturally relevant one. People just decided to call everything that is sentient but nonhuman and could be bonded with (and caught with an apricorn and later a pokeball) , a "pokemon".
The big challenge to this is of course that almost all pokemon lay eggs and their genetics work in a similar fashion, but that still leaves out the genderless pokemon (with Ditto being a sort of bridge between them) and the undiscovered egg group (even if some legendaries are supposedly one-of-a-kind, others canonically have multiple individuals)
