First Encounter Challenge
The first encounter challenge is actually a modification of one of the rules found in the Nuzlocke Challenge. The idea of the First Encounter Challenge is that you are limited only to the first pokemon that you encounter in an area (an area being a route, a cave, a city, etc.). There are other limitations, however:
Hard mode (optional, you can pick all or just some hard rules if you prefer):
Like many challenges, there is a single challenge and an ultimate challenge.
For the single challenge you only need to play through one game. This can be any game you choose, including completed hacks such as Pokemon Brown or Prism.
For the ultimate challenge you play through one game from each generation, working your way up beginning from generation 1 and ending at generation 5. No hacks please.
End games: R/B/Y/Fr/Lg: Defeat or catch Mewtwo. G/S/C/Hg/Ss: Defeat Red. R/S/E: Defeat Champion Steven. D/P/Pl: Defeat Champion Cynthia. B/W: Defeat Champion Alder.
If you want to join this challenge, bear in mind that the first set of rules are obligatory. As for the optional set (see hard mode), please state which rules you will be choosing in your game. Also state which games you will be playing (one per generation) and whether it is a single or ultimate challenge.
Have fun!

The first encounter challenge is actually a modification of one of the rules found in the Nuzlocke Challenge. The idea of the First Encounter Challenge is that you are limited only to the first pokemon that you encounter in an area (an area being a route, a cave, a city, etc.). There are other limitations, however:
- You may only catch first stage pokemon. No evolved forms except pokemon that have a non-wild baby pre-evolution. You may, however, evolve your pokemon after they have been caught.
- If the first encounter of an area is a pokemon that you have caught before, you can't catch it.
- If the first encounter of an area is the same species as another first encounter that you didn't catch in a previous area, you still can't catch it.
- Once you have encountered a pokemon in an area, whether you caught it or not, you must rule the area out for any future captures.
- You are allowed to catch as many HM slaves as you like, but you must NEVER use them in battle, even in the wild.
- You can only use a limited number of balls to catch a wild pokemon. 2 ultra balls, 4 great balls or 8 pokeballs. 1 ultra ball is worth 2 great balls or 4 pokeballs. 1 great ball is worth 2 pokeballs. So, for example, you could use 4 pokeballs and 1 ultra ball to catch a pokemon. If it still escapes after that, you can't catch it.
Hard mode (optional, you can pick all or just some hard rules if you prefer):
- You cannot catch HM slaves (replaces rule 4 in regular rules) unless you are completely unable to progress any further, in which case you are allowed just one.
- You can only use 1 pokeball, 1 great ball or 1 ultra ball to catch a pokemon. Any more than that and you can't catch it. (replaces rule 5 in regular rules)
- Master ball is banned.
- If your pokemon is defeated by a wild pokemon, a Team Rocket member, a gym leader or an elite four, you must release your pokemon.
- Revives are banned.
- You can limit your encounter type for an extra challenge. So, you can make it so that you are only allowed to catch pokemon in tall grass, or only allowed to catch pokemon in caves, for example. Here are the encounter types: Grass, cave, fish, surf, rock smash. As for gift/trade pokemon, you may acquire those if you encountered the pokemon needed by the obligatory rules and your own added harder rules.
- Or you can make up some of your own rules...
