Its that time of year again and you might think its crazy for anyone to be excited to watch, as my mother coins it, a modern day slave auction and, in a way, she kind of has a point with the Combine and all the Pre-Draft examinations potential Draftees go through. Yet despite that, the NFL is the most powerful and dominant sport in the USA. It's tried to expand its reach into other international markets like Baseball and Basketball have done but alas it's likely going to remain a predominantly American sport. Below I'll give my thoughts on the First Round, which is going to be Televised Nationally on ABC along with ESPN and NFL Network. I have two local teams(for now...) drafting in the top 4 and one has two extra First Round picks because they're owned by a moron with a haircut that even Donald Trump would admit sucks.
Anyways, here's my Mock Draft:
Feel free to give your comments.
Anyways, here's my Mock Draft:
Spoiler:
1) Arizona Cardinals: Kyler Murray(QB: Oklahoma). Even though I think this is a major mistake of the highest order given that they spent a 3rd and a 5th round pick to move up to take Josh Rosen last year, all the offseason moves, including the hiring of a Coach with a sub .500 record at the College level(which is bad frankly) points to Kyler Murray being the pick. Kyler is more athletic and fits the new coach's scheme more than Josh Rosen does and if Rosen was upset about the 9 teams that passed on him in 2018(was actually 8 because Cleveland had two picks), how do you think he's going to react to the speculation regarding Arizona taking Murray? The two QB's can't co-exist so expect Rosen to be on the move once Murray is selected first overall. NY Giants would be a likely landing spot but don't overlook Green Bay and New England as potential Dark Horse candidates as the price for Rosen likely won't surpass a 2nd Round Pick.
2) San Francisco 49ers: Quinnen Williams(DT: Alabama). The 49ers have drafted Defensive Line for three of the past 4 years and unless they get an offer they can't refuse, I can't see them passing on an Elite Defensive Lineman in this year's draft. Seeing as the 49ers run a 3-4 scheme, having an immovable object or Nose Tackle in the middle is critical to its success and having a dominant interior Defensive Line can yield considerable benefits by stopping the run and pressure up the middle on passing downs. Nick Bosa and Quinnen Williams are basically a 1A/1B of this year's class and if I had to pick between the two, I'd go for Williams since Aaron Donald, Fletcher Cox and other Defensive Tackles have illustrated the importance of the position. Who knows, maybe Williams will yield memories of Bryant Young, a 49er great from the late 90's/early 2000's.
If they do get a Trade Offer, expect them to target Offensive Line like they did last year.
3) New York Jets: Nick Bosa(DE: Ohio State). Whomever the Niners don't take, the Jets will likely snag unless they get a Trade offer they can't refuse. If they do trade down, expect them to look at Offensive Line to better protect Darnold and give Bell more running lanes, Cornerback or Wide Receiver.
4) Oakland Raiders: Dwayne Haskins(QB: Ohio State). I literally have no freaking idea as to what the Raiders are doing. They unloaded Kahlil Mack prior to last season for 2 1st Picks(one of which they gave up a 2nd Round Pick to get) and Amari Cooper, arguably their best Receiving option entering his prime, for another 1st round pick. This points to me that Gruden is cleaning house and wants to have "his guys" and nothing would prove that more than getting his Quarterback by selecting Haskins at 4. Further adding speculation that they might go this route is that they leaked to the media that they intend to make a splash/surprise at their pick. As crazy as this pick might be with the team having Derek Carr and the Draft being rich in Defensive talent, consider the fact that Carr has suffered nasty injuries in his relatively short career, including a broken fibula and fracture in his back. If Haskins is picked at 4, expect him to sit behind Carr for one year before Carr is shipped out with minimal impact towards the team's cap.
5) Tampa Bay Buccaneers: Ed Oliver(DT: Houston). Oliver is quietly rising on my own board because I've been reading that he's being compared to a younger and possibly more athletic version of Aaron Donald. If he's anything like Donald, then this is a match made in heaven for the Buccaneers as Gerald McCoy is aging and pairing Oliver with McCoy, even for one year is well worth the pick. Other possibility is Inside Linebacker Devin White out of LSU.
6) New York Giants: Josh Allen(DE: Kentucky). Giants will be out of the QB stakes in this draft and likely will pursue Josh Rosen if the top 5 falls the way it does above. As a result, the Giants will look to bolster their Edge Rush after trading away Olivier Vernon and Josh Allen looks to be the best available pick here.
7) Jacksonville Jaguars: T.J. Hockenson(TE: Iowa). I haven't seen a Tight End taken this high since Vernon Davis well over a decade ago. He does everything you want in a Tight End and considering that their new QB in Foles loves the TE, it would behoove the Jaguars to give him their version of Zach Ertz.
8) Detroit Lions: Jawaan Taylor(OT: Florida). The Lions will likely trade back if the board falls this way but if they stand pat, I expect them to fortify their Offensive Line by taking Taylor to try and further bolster their Running Game and giving yet another body to block for Matthew Stafford.
9) Buffalo Bills: Noah Fant(TE: Iowa). Josh Allen needs weapons and Noah Fant is a physical freak. He gives opposing defenses nightmares with his size and speed and it might behoove Buffalo to give New England a taste of their own medicine with the terror that Gronkowski gave their Division over the past 9 years. If not Fant, they'll likely look at Offensive Line to keep Allen upright.
10) Denver Broncos: Devin White(ILB: LSU). Broncos would jump at the chance to get their next Field General should he fall to them at 10. With Chubb and Miller attacking from the Edge, White would give them stability in the Middle.
11) Cincinnati Bengals: Rashan Gary(DE: Michigan). His Shoulder injury will cause him to fall but a top 10 talent falling outside the top 10 is too much to pass up. Going QB is another possibility seeing as Dalton didn't get an extension.
12) Green Bay Packers: Andre Dillard(OT: Washington State). Last year they traded out and have two picks this year. With Fant and Hockenson already off the board, expect them to trade back again to acquire more draft capital. If they stand pat, I see them going Offensive Line to better protect Rodgers seeing as Minnesota and Chicago have formidable Defensive fronts.
13) Miami Dolphins: Drew Lock(QB: Missouri). With Fitzpatrick as their current QB, getting the future should be their priority. Wouldn't be surprised if they trade up to 10 to try and nab one of the 3 QB's projected to go in the first round.
14) Atlanta Falcons: Christian Wilkins(DT: Clemson). Clemson has been dominant the last few years and Christian Wilkins is part of the reason why. With Grady Jarret already on their Defensive Line, Wilkins would give them an inside presence that will keep their opponents up at night.
15) Washington Redskins: Clelin Ferrel(DE: Clemson). Back to back Clemson players would be surreal but makes sense as he's the best player available. Quarterback is a glaring need but with all 3 QB's in the first round already off the board, it would be prudent to go Defense. Unless they can buy their way to Haskins or Lock, it would be best to forego reaching at QB here.
16) Carolina Panthers: Jonah Williams(OT/OG: Alabama). Being able to play both Tackle and Guard allows Carolina flexibility on the Offensive Line and Cam Newton can use all the protection he can get.
17) New York Giants: Cody Ford(OT/OG: Oklahoma). New York's Offensive Line needs more work and Ford yields flexibility by being able to play both Tackle and Guard.
18) Minnesota Vikings: Jeffrey Simmons(DT: Mississippi State). I would not be surprised if Minnesota trades back since they really need OLine help and the run of OLine ahead of them means they'll have to forego it until later in the draft. If they're unable to move back, don't be surprised if they bolster their Defensive Line with more talent and depth. Simmons is recovering from ACL surgery but Minnesota can afford to be patient.
19) Tennessee Titans: Greedy Williams(CB: LSU). Tennessee hosts the Draft this year and bolstering their Defensive secondary would be a good way to give their fans something to cheer about. Williams is regarded as the best DB in this year's Draft class and with Andrew Luck and Deshaun Watson in your Division, it's a prudent pick.
20) Pittsburgh Steelers: Byron Murphy(CB: Washington). Pittsburgh had no problems getting to the QB but they couldn't stop anyone throwing the Football. Murphy hopefully will help solve that problem.
21) Seattle Seahawks: Montez Sweat(DE: Mississippi State). With Frank Clark being traded, this all but points to them going Edge Rush here.
22) Baltimore Ravens: Marquise Brown(WR: Oklahoma). Time to give Lamar Jackson some weapons on the outside and Brown is considered the top WR in this year's Draft Class.
23) Houston Texans: Greg Little(OT: Mississippi). Watson got hammered last year so Offensive Line is a priority.
24) Oakland Raiders(via Chicago): Josh Jacobs(RB: Alabama). Gruden loves to run the football and with a glaring need at the position, it makes sense here.
25) Philadelphia Eagles: Josh Abrams(S: Mississippi State). For a team with few holes, bolstering their Secondary makes sense with Rodney Mcleod coming off injury and a potential free agent next year.
26) Indianapolis Colts: Garret Bradbury(C: N.C. State). What Quenton Nelson did last year for Andrew Luck was nothing short of a miracle. Luck needs more protection and nothing would be better than giving him another interior Offensive Lineman. Dexter Lawrence(DT: Clemson) is another possibility.
27) Oakland Raiders(via Dallas): Brian Burns(DE: Florida State). Burns is slated to go top 20 and with the first two picks focusing on Offense, Oakland has to address the Defense and an Edge Rusher is what they need.
28) L.A. Chargers: Rock Ya-Sin(CB: Temple). I watched Week 1 against KC last year and they couldn't defend the pass on a consistent basis. While their Pass Rush is Elite, locking down opposing WR's long enough is what matters and the Chargers opt to bolster their Secondary.
29) Seattle Seahawks(via Chiefs): DeAndre Baker(CB: Georgia). Overhaul of their Secondary continues.
30) Green Bay Packers(via Saints): Devin Bush(LB: Michigan). Top 15 talent falling to them here is unlikely but don't be surprised if they trade out for a team looking to acquire someone.
31) L.A. Rams: Jerry Tillery(DT: Notre Dame). With Suh a Free Agent, it makes sense to replace him.
32) New England Patriots: Dalton Risner(OT/OG: Kansas State). New England's MO has been to trade out of this pick but if they stay, Offensive Line is probably a given. Irv Smith Jr. is also a very strong possibility given Gronkowski's retirement.
2) San Francisco 49ers: Quinnen Williams(DT: Alabama). The 49ers have drafted Defensive Line for three of the past 4 years and unless they get an offer they can't refuse, I can't see them passing on an Elite Defensive Lineman in this year's draft.
