How intelligent are Pokémon in battle?

Can't see one so I'll make one

So um right. How much intelligence are there in Pokémon during a battle? They seem to can't think for themselves in a trainer battle, but in the wild they are fully capable to beat a trainer.

So do you think they're just dumb, or is there another reason why it's like that?

I'm pretty sure Pokemon are supposed to follow a Trainer's commands. So when you use one in battle, it's probably thinking "Idiot, just tell me to use Thunderbolt already" but it will remain loyal and do what you say. This is shown by over-levelled traded Pokemon who deem you not worthy, and then use whatever attacks they like / can't be bothered to listen to you.

The Battle Palace in Emerald shows that the intelligence of a Pokemon might depend on its nature, too.

Like Sneaker said, Pokémon are completely in control of what they do themselves, they just choose to follow the commands of the trainer, unless they're too high-leveled after how far you've made it in the game, where they don't always obey. It's also often shown in the anime that Pokémon don't always follow their trainers commands, and sometimes taking a decision on their own, without their trainer commanding them to, so I think it's more a matter of loyalty than intelligence.

I always noticed how personified the Pokemon were, so heck I don't even think they'd need a trainer to battle. But I guess they wouldn't be taking themselves to arenas and entering themselves in battles, now would they? I think the Pokemon could operate the major moves while the trainer keeps a close eye on the battle and warns them about what the opponent may be doing or offer suggestions.

Sorry if my opinion sounded stupid, but that's just my take on it.
