4th Gen A couple questions from a non hard core poketrainer

I've been playing pokemon since the red and blue days. I have, or have acccess to, all the pokemon games execpt for Gale of Darkness, but including pokemon box (and i LOVE the box).

With the release of Diamond and Pearl i've been browsing pokesites to see things i've missed, get some ideas on what i should be doing, and find friend codes.

    So now some questions.

EVs. I've seen them in the pokemon creator program, and i've heard them talked about, but what purpose are they, and how do you raise them (to max?) without using a creator to cheat?

    Potions/Herbs
I've heard many people talk about buying and using full restores and revivals, but no mention of the revival herbs and energy roots. I know they are "bitter" and can make your pokemon "less friendly" toward you, but since they are both at much better price per HP healed, why wouldn't they be the more common to use?

Thanks for any help you can provide. I will probably never be a tourny winning trainer, but I want to know as much as i can so me and my son can raise good pokemon :)

As for the Ev question you can go to serebii.net and it should explain, but what it does it gives you effort points depending, its hard to work but its not as hard as it may seem its worth it though.

But as for the poison/herb question im not to sure about that, but I would definitly rather use HP stores instead of herbs or anything else but I think there less common because it'll let you equipped them to the pokemon and I guess they thought it'll be to easy.

I was about to post a reply, but im not allowed to post urls, so I PM you

Your probably the same as me, I have no idea what all this crap is about.

I just train them wherever has got the highest levels...

I'm really new to this too, but I learned quick. I already PM'd Toadboy about it that I could write how I trained a Tyranitar according to the book last week. Because a practical example is perhaps nicer that the math on serebii. Hm, or even better: I make a guide on how I'm going to train my Starmie, make pictures during the proces and put it on a websites for n00bs like us ;)!
Anyway, PM me if you're interested in a practical example. Because really: this stuff is only difficult when explained difficult.

Yeah, if you plan on raising serious competitive Pokemon, EVs are something you will NEED to factor. A quick shortcut I've often used is to feed ten of every vitamin (HP Up, Protein, Iron, etc) to a Pokemon once it's out of the egg at the right nature, for every stat except the one it doesn't need. For example, a physical sweeper like Gallade has no need for special attack, so once I have a male Adamant Ralts fresh out of the egg, I feed it ten HP Ups, ten Proteins, ten Irons, ten Zincs, and ten Carboses, then start levelling it up. It's not the best EV strategy to use but it is the quickest. Trust me, with good use of EVs, your Pokemon could be around 10% stronger than it would be normally.

If Pokemon like you less they might not follow orders in battle. Don't use herbs. Would you rather feed your child a drink of water that cost an extra dollar, or a nasty tasting herb that cost a dollar less? Think about that for a while.

Of course, if you're not planning on winning any real battles, then none of this important stuff matters to you. :P

EVs are Effort Value points awarded to a Poke after beating an enemy Poke. Every Pokemon gives out a certain number of Evs to a certain stat, usually the more powerful ones give out more (I think the max is 3 given out), but commoners you face normally give out 1.

The bottom line is, for every 4 Evs acquired towards a certain stat, that stat will increase by 1 point. For example, if one Poke kills 4 Zubats (Zubats give out 1 Ev towards Speed), then at the next level, your Pokes Speed will increase by 1 extra point. Each Poke can acquire a maximum of 510 Evs total, 255 max for a single stat (but if you do your math, you'll discover that 252 is the logical max).

So let's recap... 252 Max, which means that with Max EVs in a stat, it can increase by 63 extra points. That is actually a huge difference. So for devout Pokemon trainers, EVs are an extremely important thing to consider, and now that WiFi is out with online battling, it's even more important.

EDIT: in regards to Vitamins, it's sort of a short cut for EV training. Each vitamin gives out 10 Evs for a stat, and since you can only give a stat 10 vitamins, that means it's almost a free 100 EVs. That would decrease the amount of Pokes you need to battle (granted they all give 1 EV) from 252 down to 152.

Any other questions, feel free to PM me!

(granted they all give 1 EV)

Nope. Lots of Pokemon that are either stronger or more rare will often give 2 or 3 EVs, some even points toward multiple stats.

I was able to make my arceus gain 1hp by hp ev training him without even growing a level or using a hp up.

ev training made my lvl 65 tyranitar have a 261 attack.. actually not that impressive.

anyway! got a few PMs now, so I'll start working on that practical example.

    261 attack at lv60? That's pretty good. A lot of Pokemon don't even hit 260 attack at lv100. :P
