Shanghai is Explaining: This RP is heavily based off of Gensokyo, the setting of the Touhou Project series. While knowledge of the series is not needed to participate, it would certainly make the experience a lot more enjoyable. Fortunately, for those who have no intention to play masochistic shooters, everything you need to know is in the handy-dandy Touhou Wiki.

    Plotline Get!
(Or, as you more traditional folks say it, "Plotline.")

    Tensions of History are boiling!
    Eastern Wonderland is in chaos!
Girls believe you can resolve this incident.

While humans and youkai have never been the best of friends in Gensokyo, a stable system of occasional massacres and minor killings has prevented massive racial conflicts from occurring too frequently. However, despite the superficial relative peace, a majority of the humans have nursed a deep hatred of the youkai for generations, and vice versa. In fact, the only thing keeping these ancient rivalries from escalating is the presence of Yukari Yakumo, who neither hates humans, nor loves youkai, her own kin. Maintaining iron-fisted order in Gensokyo has been her duty since days far before even the oldest of beings, the ones that exist only in whispered legends.

However, the looming threat of the near-god suddenly vanished, along with the being herself. Though no indication was given at first, the signs began appearing at a worrying rate. The Maiden of the Border began to notice a weakening in the Great Hakurei Border, the only thing separating the land of magic from the Outside World. Though weakened, the Border still stands, indicating that, though she may have withdrawn, the Overseer of Gensokyo still lives.

To make matters worse, many youkai have taken advantage of the absence of Yukari, and the distraction of her unofficial shrine maiden. Becoming steadily bolder in their harassment of humans, the creatures of the night have driven their hated prey into investing all of their hopes in a magocracy, a strict government, controlled by a small council of the village's most powerful mages.

This escalation of both sides has led to an undeclared war, as massacres and killing sprees become increasingly more commonplace in every day life. As humans pray that their village will last another day to whatever deity will listen, youkai pray to their respective gods for the protection from mage patrols.

In addition to the tense situation, all are waiting to see the actions of the Warlords of Gensokyo, such as Eientei, the Scarlet Devil Mansion, Youkai Mountain, and the various realms and alternate dimensions.

However, not all have decided to participate. Several of the neutral factions, such as the Kirin, the Celestials, and the residents of the Afterlife, have decided to abstain from the conflict, in a desire to remain impartial to mundane affairs.

Contrarily, many races of youkai that have traditionally held good relations with humans, such as kappa, have split into factions regarding true loyalty.

Gensokyo has been divided in a way not seen since the primitive days of the height of youkai power.

    Character Sign-Up Sheet
Name: Utterly simple. Given name first, family name second. (Ex. Reimu Hakurei)
Age: Appearance age, with actual age in parentheses, if you aren't human. (Ex. Mokou would be 17 (1,400))
Gender: No, it doesn't have to be female.
Species: This is LolSpartaJoke Gensokyo, so keep that in mind. You can be anything from a shikigami, to a normal ghost, to a fairy.
Occupation: Whatever describes you. Can be an office you hold (Judge of Everything), your position in the community (Mischief-maker), or your day job (Yakitori stand owner).
Specialization/Ability: What field of magic(/whatever) they specialize in. Ice, fire, death, butterflies, elementalism, it's all fair game. Reimu would be "Purification", for example, while Marisa would be "Destruction." Or, for a harder example, Meiling specializes in "Hand-to-hand combat." Pretty much... What their shtick is. Or gohei.
Appearance: Short and sweet, but detailed enough. I don't really have too many picky things here, so... feel free to do whatever.
Personality: The barer, the better, IMHO. While it's good to give a starting point, it isn't good to lock yourself into an on-the-spot personality. Adapt, change, develop.
History: You can be a Lunarian or a fairy, but you'll all have to dance with Komachi. Your past. Whether you're a librarian from the village, or a fugitive from Makai... A detailed paragraph or two will suffice.
RP Sample: Prove your worth by writing stuff that sounds pretty, but lacks content. Or, more accurately, Reimu Hakurei shows up at your doorstep, rather angry. What do

    Wartime Spell Card Rules
Based off of Perfect Memento in Strict Sense, adapted to fit the situation.

    Explanation
In mass conflict between humans and youkai, the perpetration of atrocities, while frowned upon, is almost inevitable. In order to keep the total damage to a minimum, the following code is proposed.

    Concepts
-That full-scale war would destroy Gensokyo.
-That the existence of Gensokyo is beneficial to human and youkai alike.
-That use of one's full abilities in a conflict is to be denied.
-That disproportionate retribution is frowned upon.
-That all who reside in Gensokyo's communities acknowledge their risk of death.
-That nothing is higher than beauty, and respect, even for one's enemies.

    Law
-Lethal force may not be used against human combatants, and any spells which end the youkai cycle of reincarnation are equally illegal.
-The massacre of noncombatants is considered a war crime, and is punishable in accordance with the severity of the crime.
-The wanton murder of humans is justification for the use of illegal spells by human mages. Likewise, for youkai.
-Spells used in combat are to be given a beautiful and descriptive name.
-All spells are to be declared by name, rather than by silent casting. Violation of this law is a crime against Gensokyo itself.
-When one combatant admits defeat, the other is victorious, and all casting between them must cease.
-If an opponent surrenders, they may not be killed until appropriately judged.
    -Do not attack without reason.
-A spell must be written on paper, as a spell card. The use of foci is permitted for the purpose of gathering magical energy, but spells may not be cast without a declaration.

    The Hakurei Roleplay Rules

Created by Yukari. Disobey, and be made an example of. Painfully.

    1. Do not talk about PC-98. There are no canon characters. The exception to this rule is Yukari Yakumo, who is little more than an Absent "God".
1.1. Though the characters themselves are gone, the roles are still present (Hence "Altered Eastern Wonderland"). So, we need a ruler of Eientei (Not necessarily a Lunarian princess in exile, mind you, but you can go that route), a ruler of Hagyokorou, etc. All of the other roles, such as Vengeful Spirit (Mima), Local Nutjob (Marisa) and BA Librarian (Patchy) are free to be hijacked.

    2. I shouldn't need to, and don't want to say this, but... Yes, all PC rules apply.

    3. Like Touhou, you may use your power in any way you see fit. For example, Marisa frequently uses her magical control of the hakkero for cooking, destruction, fighting, and heating. Not to mention the other uses. Be creative, stretch your imagination.

    4. However, like Touhou, your ability is taken literally. Rumia's "Power of Darkness" is not some godly force of death and despair... She can just make it dark. Keep that in mind. More abstract descriptions, such as Reimu's "Miko Miko Powers" should be kept in moderation as well.

    5. Yes, you may be a god. No, you may not be a near capital-G god like Yukari. Minor deities, such as harvest gods, seasonal deities, and forces of nature are totally okay. Remember, in Gensokyo, there are lots of people who can beat up Spring without breaking a sweat, so don't confuse god and God.

    6. No killing humans without permission. Period. As for youkai... Roll a youkai, and know that you're open to letting yourself get utterly destroyed. Regeneration time should be proportional to the amount of deadness. You're not going to be out for weeks after getting knifed, but you won't shrug off Yukari's assault in half an hour. If you want to seal/permanently end your enemy... Make sure everyone's okay with it.
6.1. In short, youkai death is similar to getting injured for a human. Of course, the more powerful you are, the more it takes to bring you down, so the longer you'll be out.

    7. Concerning the above Spell Card Rules... Yes, you may break them, as they are more like guidelines then iron rules. However, know the consequences of such an act. If you start using lethal spells on humans, or existence-ending spells on youkai, prepare to face equivalent or greater force. The rules were written so that youkai would curb their power and not cause Magical Winter. Keep that in mind. Break them, and die.

    8. Have fun, graze danmaku, and...

(9). Roleplayers are preparing. Please wait warmly until this is ready.
