    A popular theory going around pretty much every thread at the moment is the idea that USUM will be set in a different world, much how ORAS were set in a different version of Hoenn. This has led to some fun little theories about how the characters might be different this time around - Lillie and Gladion switching roles, Lusamine being a protagonist, Guzma being a Trial Captain, and so on.

    So let's collect some ideas. If these games were set in an alternate world, who would you like to see change, and what would their new role be? Who has the most potential to be more interesting with a change to their role, in your opinion? Is there anyone who should have no change to their role from SM in such a scenario, and if so, why?

    Again, it doesn't matter how likely or unlikely any of this is.
     
    No to lillie and gladion switching roles. Gladion deserves his epic role as it. Both can keep their original roles.

    I think that everyone keeping their role and personality is the best.
     
    I really like the idea of Lusamine becoming the good guy now, but I couldn't imagine Guzma taking her place as the true evil of the game. There'd need to be a bigger evil to replace Lusamine (Colress?).

    Maybe Lillie working as a spy for Aether while still traveling around with the protagonist and Hau. I'd find it a shame if Lillie didn't travel with us anymore.

    I rather lillie doesn't travel with our character.

    I don't think Lusamine should become good either. She is a decent villain and should maintain that role in USUM. No one else can play the villain in the game better than her.
     
    I would still like Lillie! Maybe she follows the professor and the character around with an motive? It sounds plausible! First making Lusamine out to sound evil by her, but she ended up being the bad one.
     
    I think Edgelord Lillie would be absolutely hilarious and I'd love to see it, even if only because it would probably mean that she would be out of the player character's face. Although I honestly don't want Gladion taking her place as the hand-holder of the game, as I find him equally as unappealing and bland in that role, and I can't imagine giving him an even more annoying role would do much for him.

    But Lillie's as mother's little girl, that would be something entertaining to see...maybe even surprising, if it was a Face-Heel Turn kind of thing.

    Although in a lot of cases I feel like it'd be giving characters actual personalities and roles, rather than changing them. There isn't a lot there to change, after all...
     
    Disagree. Lillie is the bland, and the unappealing one. Lillie should not take Gladion's role.

    Gladion is one of the good characters in the game and should have a bigger role.

    I've been thinking about this as well. I've also been thinking about something else too, and that's the possibility of Gladion having the main antagonistic role. I feel like they could do some good storytelling with the good vs evil sibling dynamic with Lillie and Gladion if they went that route. What made me think of this was the Gladion concept art of him in Aether Foundation uniform that was posted in the other friend. What if the Ultra Beasts are somehow responsible for the deaths or disappearances of both parents, and Gladion seeks revenge against the Ultra Beasts?
     
    I think it'd be a step backwards, if Lusamine and her husband whose name I frequently forget swapped roles, honestly...Lusamine didn't make much of a villain given that she went down the axe-crazy path and didn't appear anywhere near enough, but there was plenty of potential for her to be a much more interesting character.

    Her husband would need a pretty radical re-design to be someone you could take seriously in that role, too...and that aside, his disappearance and absence in-game was beyond stupid and I'd hope they'd fix it so that he's not just kinda there because it's bordering on an unforgivably huge plot hole. I'd prefer it if he had an expanded role and Lusamine had some character depth, not if he was the central antagonist and she was essentially written out of the game.

    If both were gone, having Lillie actually lead the Aether Foundation in secret and be an even bigger Edgelord with her brother would be hilarious. If she took her annoying hand-holding role up to the point of the reveal, it might even redeem her character a little. Maybe.

    Keep lusamine as villain and keep Gladion his status as thr best of the family. Lillie deserves the handholding role. Lillie is incapable of leading anything especially the aether paradise.
