    Just a question...
Why is Ash so terrible that he can't beat a beginner trainer?
    Pretty pathetic.

He's been on how many journeys?
    How many Pokemon?

His Pikachu HAS to be Level 100+ by now.
    And he can't beat Paul?

    Aggravates me. Anyone else?
ESPECIALLY since Paul treats his Pokemon so terribly.
He should be teaching him a lesson.
    >_<

Paul isn't a beginning trainer. He said he's been to Kanto, Johto, Hoenn and now Sinnoh.

Yes Paul has traveled through all the regions like Ash, and he caught Chimchar in the wild after seeing how great Blaze was...

Torterra is his original starter though...it's funny though, I wonder why Prof. Rowan never knew Paul, if he is the one to distribute the starter pokemon to beginner pokemon...

Many people in the anime have gotten their "starter" from someone other than [regional Pokemon professor]

That's true...Paul could have gotten it from his brother...

Or, since people are comparing him to the infamous Silver,
he could have stolen it from the lab, which is why the
professor never met him. I can't say it's out of his nature
to do such a thing. Plus, he said he's traveled across the regions, so
he could have just left the region he stole the turtwig from never
to be heard or seen again.

Back on topic, I'm surprised to. Even though he's some form of a
top-notch trainer (and somehow never met Ash since he's travelled to
the same places as Ash.), his pokemon were still new, yet Ash struggled
to score a tie on their first battle, I believe. Pikachu should have
smoked them with a thundershock, let alone Thunderbolt + Iron Tail
+ Volt Tackle and all those moves. They're trying to even out the playing field
and make it seem like Pikachu has short term memory loss per season and
forgets how to use it's powers.

Shinji just pwns like that. And he's traveled through all the regions just like Satoshi. Only there's a difference: Satoshi sucks. He hardly ever evolves his Pokémon (though he's been doing it more recently). =/ As for Shinji, his Pokémon pwn. =P

I doubt that, tbh. Paul's into tough love, not illegal activities (e.g. theft).

I think that if you watch the episode where turtwig evolves, its hilarious how Ash and Dawn can't come up with a decent argument why Ash's style of training is better than Paul's.

In the end, their argument amounted to: "No, you're wrong"

    Turtwig evolves :O
The latest episode i've seen was the Wallace Cup third part.
    >_<' But who's wrong?

Also, I agree with the illegal activites part.
I can't imagine him breaking into Elm's lab and stealing a totodile or anything,
but I could just picture him insulting a weak trainer and ruthlessly beating the
trainer's turtwig because he sees potential in Overgrow, but not the trainer's
    battling style.

Also, tough love or not, he's rude. His pokemon sustain that type of
battle style, because they think that's how trainers are supposed to train
the pokemon (which is shown by Chimchar's shock at Ash's training habits).
If all his pokemon had a day with Ash, they'd see the flaws in Paul's
    rigerous (yet somehow rewarding) methods.

    Yesss.

That, and Ash's Pikachu 'resets' with every region. So when he and Shinji first battled, Pikachu's level was even with the Sinnoh starters. Because that's how messed up the anime really is..

It is true...how can Ash beat Brandon of the Battle Pyramid WITH Pikachu, and yet struggle against someone like Paul? The writers made no sense in that part...

Ash will losee to Paul three to four times is my speculation, as well as the fact that Pikachu is the missingno of the anime and changes every region. Gary was a little different than Paul, Gary would destroy Shinji mainly because Gary discourages characters during battle, well, except when he lost to Mewtwo in the first movie. Plus, Shinji only counters a trainers strategy, so he would lose to first gen Ash, who had no strategy but was still awesome. Gary is a better trainer than Shinji. Ash gets weaker after every league defeat. Shinji counters strategies, that said, a 3 year old could beat him for that reason.
