3rd Gen Battle Tower - Student?

So, I remember that there is one 'NPC' in the Battle Tower (Emerald) asked me to become his 'mentor'. There will be two options, yes and no. And.. yes, I answered yes (LoL?) .

After I went out and into the Battle Tower, he went missing. A few days (or maybe weeks?) later, he came back. Asking me whether Skarmory or 'another' Pokemon is better. Well, I forgot the other one.

I checked some Pokemon fan site about this, I can't seem to find any clue. Have you encounter this NPC?

That's pretty interesting. Nope, I don't believe I've ever encountered him, sadly. What happens when you attempt answering all his Pokémon-related questions? If I had to guess, I would say he'd be rewarding you with some item of sorts, but can't be hundred-percent sure. At least this is what happens in other games when we manage to get ourselves into these kind of situations.

According to Bulbapedia you can battle with the apprentice either as an opponent or as a partner in Multi Battle modus when you've answered his questions.

I remember encountering him in my most recent replay. I'm sure that he teams up with you on some battles. In the tower of course.
