    Pokemon Battle Roles

Every pokemon on a team needs has a role in battle. So, I might as well list on how many their are exactly. I will list which pokemon are common on regular teams and such. With the new release of D/P, I have seen much discussion on battle roles and more. Anyway, please refer to navigation to see what is what.

    The Roles

Every pokemon has a role as said before. And are important and such. A list of tiers can be found here. (here hasn't been linkified yet because tiers have not been made)

    Physical Sweeper

Physical Sweepers are pokemon that use physical moves to crush the opponent. They also are known for using attack enhancing attacks. Attacks such as Swords Dance and Dragon Dance. They also are supposed to be fast. Fast physical sweepers can outspeed pokemon and beat them after a Swords Dance. Here is an example of a Physical Sweeper.

    Garchomp @ Life Orb
    Nature: Jolly
    Trait: Sand Veil
    EV Spread: 6 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPD
    -Fire Fang
    -Dragon Claw
    -Swords Dance
    -Earthquake

Garchomp is an excellent and speedy physical sweeper all together. Life Orb boosts the sweeping ability along with Swords Dance. His movepool is also filled with physical attacks, and EV spread is based on atk and spd. Jolly nature, which increases Speed and decreases Sp. Attack makes the physical sweeper even faster.

    Special Sweeper

Special Sweepers are like physical sweepers, just special attacks. So, i'm sure you know the drill. They also are supposed to be fast, and use enhancing techniques such as Calm Mind and Nasty Plot.

    Azelf @ Life Orb
    Nature: Timid/Modest
    Trait: Levitate
    EV Spread: 6 HP / 252 SP. ATK / 252 SPD
    -Grass Knot
    -Flamethrower
    -Psychic
    -Nasty Plot

Azelf is a common special sweeping monster. It's EV Spread of course is all put into sp. atk and speed. It's nature can be timid or modest. Weather you want it faster or more powerful in special sweeping. Nasty Plot also makes it easier for Azelf to sweep teams with it's Special Sweeping power.

    Physical Tank

Physical Tanks are made to absorb physical attacks such as Earthquake. They take hits, throw hits to common predators, and heal themselves. They also sometimes support the team.

    Cresselia @ Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Trait: Levitate
    EV Spread: 252 HP / 200 Def / 52 Sp. Def
    -Reflect
    -Ice Beam
    -Moonlight
    -Thunder Wave

Made to wall physical sweepers. Set up reflect and absorbs them. Also takes in special sweepers every so often. Ice beam takes on salamence and garchomp. Thunder Wave allows you to outspeed your competition, or enemies, that try to attack you. Their are many other physical sweepers also

    Special Tank

Specials tanks of course absorb special attack. One paticular pink pokemon is definitely used alot as a special tank.

    Blissey @ Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Trait: Natural Cure
    EV Spread: Dunno
    -Seismic Toss
    -Softboiled
-Thunder Wave / Ice Beam / Aromatherapy
-Thunder Wave / Ice Beam / Aromatherapy

Blissey - one of the most common special walls ever made. It walls many special sweepers out their. It also can heal it self. Not to mention stop enemies with thunder wave.

    Pseudo Hazer

Pokemon that use roar or whirlwind to make pokemon to get forced out. They counter pokemon that have been powered exceptionally boosted by attacks, or more things.

    Suicune @ Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Trait: Pressure
    EV Spread: (Don't Remember Exactly)
    -Roar
    -Surf
    -Calm Mind
    -Rest

This calm minds. It also roars away pokemon that are using moves such as dragon dance and swords dance. Also eliminates pokemon with surf as well. Rest heals it.

    Hazer

Hazers use the move haze to eliminate any stat changes, much related to pseudo hazers, just that they use the move haze rather than a roar or whirlwind attack. The different between the 2 moves can be found here.

    Weezing with haze <_<

That was the example. I never have used a hazer, so weezing with haze is pretty much I could come up with.

    Baton Passer

Baton Passers use their ultimate attack boosting moves (swords dance, dragon dance, agility) and using the attack baton pass, which passes on stat changes.

    Ninjask @ Leichi Berry
    Nature: Adamant
    Trait: Speed Boost
    EV Spread: 6 HP / 252 ATK / 252 SPD
    -Aerial Ace/X Scissor
    -Swords Dance
    -Substitute
    -Baton Pass

Ninjask is a good baton passer. Seeing how speed boost raises your speed each move, you could substitute - not taking damage from the opponent, and getting a speed boost. Substitute low enough, and leichi berry comes and gives a boost. Swords Dance also helps, and then you baton pass all the stat changes to your sweeper.

    Spiker

Spikers have the ability to spike opponents teams. Spikes inflict damage on any pkoemon switched on. Their are 3 spikes:

Spikes: Inflicts Most Damage (Does not inflict damage on flying pokemon)
Stealth Rock: Inflicts Damage, inflicts more damage on flying pokemon
Toxic Spikes: Poisons Pokemon (3 layers = toxic poisoning)

    Skarmory @ Leftovers
    Nature: Impish
    Trait: Keen Eyes
    EV Spread: ???
    -Spikes/Stealth Rock
    -Roar
    -Drill Peck
    -Roost

Skarmory is an excellent spiker. :O

    Wish Passer

Passes Wishes to other pokemon on your team. Healing them as well. Usually have protect to heal themselves when they need it.

    Vaporeon @ Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Trait: Water Absorb
    EV Spread: ???
    -Ice Beam
    -Surf
    -Wish
    -Protect

Wish heals. Protect for when vappy has weak damage.

    Supporter

Supports the team with status effects against the opponent, wish heals, and much more.

    Cresselia @ Leftovers
    Nature: Bold
    Trait: Levitate
    EV Spread: ???
    -Reflect
    -Thunder Wave
    -Ice Beam
    -Moonlight / Lunar Dance

Set up reflects and paralyze opponents to help your team out in numerous ways!

    Choice Bander/Specer

Choice banders use the item Choice Band to induce extreme damage against the opponent. Choice specs does the same exact thing, just special attack instead of physical.

    Tyranitar @ Choice Band
    Nature: Adamant
    Trait: Sand Stream
    EV Spread: 60 HP / 252 Atk / 196 Spd
    -Crunch
    -Earthquake
    -Stone Edge
    -Pursuit/Elemental Fang

Extremely powerful CB'er here. Crunch and Stone Edge get extreme power from STAB. When forcing a switch, pursuit to do more damage. An elemental fang will also hurt the opponent badly. Ice Fang is reccomended out of the 3.

    Reversaler

Reversalers often use the move reversal to enduce powerful hits. Usually have the move endure or the item focus sash equiped.

    Lucario @ Focus Sash
    Nature: Adamant
    Trait: Steadfast
    EV's: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
    -Reversal
    -Endure
    -Stone Edge
    -Close Combat

Endure just in case focus sash doesn't kick in for 1 HP. Then Reversal away. SE and CCombat both do damage as well do things like gyarados and etc.

    Sleep Talker

A pokemon that goes to sleep and attacks using the move sleep talk - which allows you to attack while asleep.

    Zapdos@Leftovers
    - Rest
    - Thunderbolt
    - Hidden Power [Ice]
    - Sleep Talk

    Subseeder

A pokemon who uses substitute and leech seed in synch.

Here is a quote from Shadowknight32 (or tek):

A SubSeeder is basically a Pokemon that uses Substitute in conjunction with Leech Seed. Most of the time, these have high speed.

    Sceptile@Leftovers
    - Leech Seed
    - Substitute
    - Leaf Blade
    - Hidden Power [Fire]

Sceptile makes for a wonderful Sub Seeder. He has a great speed which makes him almost always faster than other Pokemon. The reason you Sub is beacause, it takes 25% of you max HP to make a sub. However, with most Pokemon, Leech Seed Restores 25%+ HP. The higher the opponents HP is, the more HP you recover with Leech Seed. So you use Leech Seed, then continue Subbing till their HP is depleted. In the case that your sub isn't broken, you can go ahead and attack.

    SubPuncher

    A substitute using focus punching.

    Quote from Tek/Shadowknight32:

A pokemon that uses the moves, Focus Punch and Substitute in conjuncture with one another. You set your sub up and attack from behind it.

    Rhydon@Leftovers
    - Substitute
    - Focus Punch
    - Rock Slide
    - Megahorn

This has seriously got to be my favorite Pokemon. It can utilize it's great HP for 404 subs. Which may not mean alot to you but in battle it does.

The attack Seismic Toss is quite common, as it always is going to do 100 damage (At Level 100), so with 404 HP or more, it is possible for you to have a sub up and it not be destroyed by Seismic Toss. Seeing as how it will only do 24% damage, while it takes 25% damage to break a sub.

Sub Punchers usually have a high base attack which is almost a requirement, along with a couple more damaging moves.

    oooh. very interesting..

    Suicune EV spread...

    252 HP / 252 Sp.Def / 4 Def

    Lucario @ Salac Berry
    Nature: Adamant
    Trait: Steadfast
    EV's: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 6 HP
    -Reversal
    -Endure
    -Stone Edge
    -Close Combat

    Skarmory EV spread..

    252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Sp.Def
