Can a USA Nintendo DS play Japanese GBA games?

I'm asking for a friend but I would like to know as well. Title.

oh yeah the reason this is a good question is because the DS isn't region locked.... but does this apply to playing GBA games in one as well?

Well, since the original GBA was able to play Japanese GBA games, there should be no reason why the DS can't play Japanese GBA games.

Some things regarding GBA games are locked (like I don't think you can import Pokémon from your Japanese Ruby cartridge into your US Pearl cartridge, etc.) but actually playing the game should be region-free, so it'll work fine.
