1st Gen Can someone explain how the Mew glitch works?

I know HOW to do it, I'm just curious WHY it does. Just seems so odd that doing seemingly random things would cause Mew of all the Pokemon to appear.

That's weird, it's sort of like how the MissingNo. glitch works. I wonder if people originally stumbled on these types of glitches by almost complete accident, or if they ripped apart the game script to see if they could cause glitches like this? :S

I would say that it would be pretty difficult to figure out these glitches by accident. I mean, its not like to activate them you go through a normal sequence of events. There are actually specific things you have to go out of your way to do to activate the cheat.
