Have you ever tried to place pokemon into your own categories? For instance, I've been working on a cat and mouse theory. I think that there are enough pokemon in each category to warrant a whole new classification of Pogeys XD Check it out:
    Cat:
    Meowth (Persian)
    Skitty (Delcatty)
    Raikou

    Mouse:
Pikachu (Pichu, Raichu) - btw, "chu" means "mouse" in Japanese! :)
    Marril (Azurrill(sp?) Azumarril)
    Rattatta (Raticate)

Can you think of any others that would fit into these categories? Or how about a category of your own? Here's a good start: There are lots of 'em that look like dogs. And there are Piggy pokemon too. :P Let's see what you can come up with.

Oh, and try not to use birds, as there is actually a "bird pokemon" category in the games. :(

Well, Raikou is 1000% dog! You see the name of second's Generation Legedary trio is Legendary dogs! I dont think is any other Mouse or Cat Pokemon...

    Lol

RAIKOU IS A TIGER! NO MORE ARGUMENTS!!! =.=

    Skitty<--kitty...

Yeah, Raikou always looked like a tiger to me too... that's why I put him in there. And although Americans might call them the legendary dogs, I wonder if the Japanese really called them "densetsu no inu"? I honestly don't know. But I realize now that I should have mentioned that if you'd like to dispute my classification, you're free to do so. I don't really think there's any wrong or right when you do this, lol.

I always thought that Raikou, Entei, and Suicune resemble cats. I don't see any dog in them.

    Some dog Pokemon IMO are:
    -Growlithe
    -Arcanine
    -Snubbull
    -Granbull
    -Poochyena
    -Mightyena

    etc.

as for other mouse Pokemon, what about Sandshrew (it doesn't really look like a shrew...) and Cyndaquil? but then again, Cyndaquil reminds me of an aardvark.......

Poochyena and Mightyena are debatable, for their names indicate hyena, so they may not be canines. Actually, I came up with a group called "Kaline", which refers to Pokemon who look like mixes of cat and dog, but are neither. Pokemon in the Kaline group are:

    The legendary BEASTS
    Eevee and the eons
    Absol
Electrike and Manectric (many say dog but their animal origin is hazy)

Then there are the Mammosaurs, warm-blooded beasts who have physical characteristics of mammals, reptiles, and dinosaurs.

    The nido
    Rhyhorn and Rhydon
    Kangaskhan
Bulbasaur line (omg, it's got external ears)
    Squirtle line (ears and fur)

Sentient plantlife. These creatures resemble little more than living plants and, other than facial features and limbs, don't really resemble a defined animal. Other grasstypes are like Bulbasaur in that they possess characteristics of other animals, like lizards, ducks, and humans. I'm debating whether Cacnea and its evolution should be included here or not, for they are humanshape.

    Oddish line
    Bellsprout line
    Tangela
    Hoppip line
    Sunkern line
    Roselia

    I'll continue this later.

    Raikou-tiger
    Enter-Lion
Suicune-I'm not familiar with this legend, have to find the myth to it.

I just call Raikou/Entei/Suicune beasts to be honest, as they look like weird hybrids of cats and dogs. I don't care if they were meant to be cats or dogs or even fish. To me, they just look like weird animals exposed to too much radiation XD

I just agree with everything that everyone has said, although I would add Sudowoodo to Iveechan's Sentient Plantlife group. (Does it matter if its not a Grass type?)

Yeah. That's what I thought too... what about Suicune? Is it a leopard?

ANYWAYS, I thought that Mightyena and Poochyena fit in a dog group because they also look like wolves. (I thought that hyenas were canine... :/)

I haven't heard of any stories about Suikun (the king of water) so I have no idea what Suicune is.

From what I've heard of, The sea dragon (Kingdra? XD) has a beast that somewhat can be Suicune, however it was not an actual animal.

Hyenas are canine.Suicune looks like a horse to me.In pokemon 4ever
    it ran majesticly.
    Primate
    Slakoth
    Vigoroth
    Slaking
    Mankey
    Primeape

    Bovine
    Miltank
    Tauros

Oh boy... :P Hyenas are not canines...they share the same order (Carnivora), but not the same family (canines are Canidae, while hyenas are, oddly enough, Hyaenidae). They're more closely related to cats (among other things) than they are to dogs.

But anyways, with that said...um...back on topic for me. :P For a "mouse" group, I would add in plusle and minun as well...since...heck, if the pika line's in there, then why not plusle and minun? They look similar. XD

As for my own groups...hm. @_@ I tend to go more by the system already used for real-life animals...things like...canine, feline, mustelid, etc. :P

An example (quick one, as I'm running out of time at the moment):

    Ungulates (that is, hooved mammals):

    Ponyta/Rapidash
Drowzee/Hypno (though not so much Hypno, but they're based off tapirs, which is a hooved mammal)
    Tauros
    Miltank
    Girafarig
Swinub/Piloswine (debatable; they're pigs, though for some reason they don't have hooves, but just claws...)
Grumpig (would add Spoink, but...I dunno. That little thing has no hooves XD)

Oh, and, in my opinion, under "Primate" I would also put Meditite and...eh, possibly Medicham. But especially Meditite, as it makes me think of an onion-headed monkey. O_o

More possibly later, whenever I actually have time. >_<

I was also thinking that the Hitmon and Machop line belong to an anthro dinosaurian group. Of course, Hitmonlee doesn't really look like anything, unless you base it off my avatar. Hariyama and Makuhita are confusing because they don't look like ANYTHING. Just human-like things. But they seem to be more closely related to Meditite and Medicham than the anthrosaurs.

I dislike assigning Pokemon to human occupations. I could just as easily called Hitmonchan a boxer, but looking at his physical appearance, he is much more than that.

the classifications of all pokemon are beast apliances...

animals with the power to use the power of apliances and things like that.
