So, I don't get a lot of time to play Pokemon White, because I'm still settling in to my new place, but I was in Yaguruma forest, searching for those d*** monkeys for about 3-4 hours! In that time, I may have inadvertently figured out how to chain.
Okay, so we know that rare pokemon appear in shaking grass. I have noticed that they almost never appear more than two squares in, and they almost always appear on the first row/column of grass. Well, I found that if I ran around without touching any grass, grass would start shaking after about 10 seconds. The first encounter was invariably a Tabunne. Then, if I took the shortest route out of the grass and continued to run around without touching the grass, more grass would start shaking. If I accidentally entered the grass, even once, I would have to battle again before I could get it shaking again.
Anyway, as I said, the first battle was always Tabunne, and usually the second, but after a couple of battles, the really rare pokemon would start to appear. Thus, I think I may have discovered chaining.
Also, as I said, I was looking for the monkeys. Nothing I did would make them appear. Finally, I put Baoppu in the lead (my starter was Mijumaru), and when I started chaining, the three monkeys and Tabunne were basically the only pokemon I ever encountered. So I'm thinking there may be a hidden mechanic where the pokemon in the lead of your party affects the encounters that you have.
Has anyone else noticed/experimented with either of these two things? I want to hear your take.
