[ASM & Hex] Changing the overworld sprite to that of your starting Pokemon in Crystal

Hello! I'm currently trying to get started on a personal ROM hacking project using the Pokecrystal disassembly, but the primary thing I want to do may be a bit of a tall order.

Basically, I'm wanting to replace the trainer with a Pokemon of the player's choice, with the overworld and trainer sprites reflecting what Pokemon you are (using one of the limited generic overworld sprites from gen 2). I've seen some generation 2 hacks allow for you to have following Pokemon, some that allow for trainer customization, and some that let you play as a Pokemon on the overworld directly, so it should be possible... but I'm a bit overwhelmed and out of my element, here.

Would anyone here happen to know a good method for implementing something like this, or have any ideas for how to go about it?
