Competitive battling... Is ridiculous?

So, I was on Smogon, and practically every other article in the UU section said "This is a great Pokemon, but it is hit hard by Stealth Rock" or "This is a great Pokemon, but it's really weak against *One Pokemon*". It could just be me being a bit stupid, but does anyone else think that things like Smogon and Serebii exaggerate the usefulness of things like Stealth Rock? Because I was doing a tournament on a little known forum ages back and as far as I can remember I was the only guy using Stealth Rock, Spikes, or anything like that at all.
