    This is something I feel should be addressed to the entire member population due to recent events.

    As you should know, the objective of the staff is to ensure that the forums function to the utmost as an equitable venue for discussion and debate, the necessary powers including but not limited to closure of topics and handing out warnings and sanctions in accordance with our forum rules. While such courses of action may seem indicative of abuse of power or contempt for the members, they are really in existence to maintain a community that most of our population of 15,000 or thereabout can appreciate as a venue to express their ideas, raise questions, and challenge other ideas. While we try our best to ensure that these powers are used for good, we still acknowledge that we, like you, are human beings and may react in a fashion that contradicts your expectations.

    If you have a complaint to file about a decision made by us or about actions by particular staff members, you have the right, as a community member, to challenge such actions in a civil and reasonable manner. This means that, among other things:
    • you should present your case with evidence to support your challenge as well as how it conflicts with current rules;
    • you should not make assumptions on behalf of the entire community or more people than are actually involved in the action to be challenged, e.g. saying that the whole community has a certain stance towards the moderators;
    • you should not resort to quips, sarcasm, or other compositional risk to defend your position; and
    • you should accept the final decision by the moderators until you develop another case thereof.
    You do not have the right to:
    • deny authority to the staff member against which a complaint is made;
    • write a litany baselessly accusing the staff of assaults; or
    • defy a decision already in effect without first challenging it.
    Refusal to accept the authority of the staff is insubordination, which we will not tolerate. As such, we will not tolerate wayward attempts to subvert the rules. As much as we have a responsibility to maintain order on the forums, you as the member have the responsibility to avert infractions of our rules on your part. Above all, while members enjoy certain rights such as this one, just being a member of our forums is a privilege that can be revoked if you are determined to be detrimental to the atmosphere desired by us and everyone else posting on our forums.

    The next time you make a challenge to the rules or decisions of a staff member — and it would be idle to deny that there will be more to come — remember this: Everyone is here to have a good time, and the staff endorses that.

    Thank you.
