Contest points system?

Okay, so one thing that still confuses me, even as I watch DP, is how contest points work. See, I get that your opponent loses points if you show off something beautiful/epic/cute/cool or if you take damage. That's pretty fundamental... but how many and when points are lost is not.

What exactly is the algorithm here? It seems completely random how points are deducted... and how many, and who loses them at certain times. Shouldn't the moves have to HIT the foe for said foe to lose points, too? This whole thing is weird to me, so I'm asking for opinions. It's... an interesting topic to debate, honestly.

Because it is random.
Anime is not games so the algorithm did not have to be done 'cause all you need is anime the deduction.
Since you could see similar moves getting different deductions, the algorithm did not exist.
It was just randomly so the episode could either be prolonged or shortened.

There isn't any real logic behind it. The Contest points just go up and down depending on whoever the writers want to win the Contest battle.
