I know EV stands for Effort Points, and IV stands for Individual Points. But, I don't know what that means. Could someone explain it?

IVs are numbers determined upon capture/hatching. Each stat can have a maximum of 31 IVs. For each IV point, your Pokemon will have one extra point added to their corresponding stat at level 100. For example, an untouched Dragonite with 0 attack IVs, with a neutral nature, will have an attack stat of 273 at level 100. On the other hand, an untouched Dragonite with 31 attack IVs will have an attack stat of 304 at level 100.

EVs are points gained through battling Pokemon. Different Pokemon give away different EVs upon defeat, in different increments, too. Each Pokemon can have a maximum of 510 EVs. Each stat can have a maximum of 255 EVs. For every 4 EVs, your Pokemon will get one extra point in their corresponding stat. Let's take another look at Dragonite. We'll say that Dragonite has the maximum IVs of 31 in his attack stat. He has a 304 attack, correct? Now say you trained Dragonite in attack. Since you only get 1 extra stat point per 4 EV points, 252 is the maximum number of EVs that actually matter in a stat. The other 3 would just be wasted, so save them for another stat. Anyways, say you trained Dragonite to have 252 EVs in attack. Since 252/4 = 63, Dragonite would get another 63 attack points added to it's attack stat. Dragonite now has 367 attack.

As you can see, IVs and EVs are incredibly important to competitve battlers due to the edge they can give you. Just think, would you rather have a Dragonite with only 273 attack, or one with a whopping 367 attack?

I think the answers here should be enough. If you have more questions about them, please ask in the Competitive Battling Center. Thanks!
