Suggestion: Customizing profiles: Fixed Width

I'd like to see a fixed-width setting where the width is predefined to something like: 600px; 800px and 1000px (or just one setting idk) when customizing user profiles.

Something to make it easier when setting background pictures / bar pictures etc. so that the profile looks the same from all forum styles. :>

I'm not going to add much more to it since there isn't much for me to add. :>
    Just discussion I guess. :>

I agree. I have a supporter account and it's so annoying to have the backgrounds with different widths that I gave up -_-"

I just use a big enough image so it fits on the majority of widths...

One of the best practices of web design is to ensure that whichever effect you are aiming for should work on the most widely used screen resolutions. I think fixed-width designs are very handy as you can't really go wrong with the size of divs and images. However, most modern computers now come with screen sizes with a width resolution of 1280px and up. This means that most people with modern computers that come with a large width screen size won't be able to view a fixed-width theme correctly. By correctly, I mean the width would be too small for the screen and you would end up having to zoom in, which ruins the original design intenton.

This is why people use background images that will be able to fit different screen sizes. For example, the simplest background image trick is to repeat it; creating a stable background effect without stretching the screen. This practice is very handy as the background seems subtle and doesn't get in the way (depending on how you designed it, of course) and it's also not very hard to make yourself.

Another trick is to make a background image of about 1280px in width and make sure the bottom 50 pixels fade into a still colour. This means that you can set the image to repeat-x or even no-repeat (although this means you would have to set the still colour to all the sides and not just the bottom) and create a visually stunning background effect, while working on most screens. A great example can be found here (try zooming in and out to note how the background image fades into grey).

If I come off as arrogant, demeaning, or anything like that, I'm sorry. There isn't even really anything that's getting me riled up here but I just talk this way and it may seem offensive in text.

I know that, but there /are/ fixed-width themes within PC.

And on top of that, there are may be also some people with screen resolutions at 1680x1050 / 1920x1080 / 2560x1600 and the maximum resolution picture that can be used as a profile background is 1280x1024.

I'm not saying make it fixed width for small resolutions, I'm saying allow fixed-width to be an /option/ for people who need precision in their themes.

Fixed width in terms of horizontal width.

Say you make a background image and in it, you've spiffed up everything in accordance to your profile. You've added lots of flashy stuff here and there and it compliments the widgets / framework but everyone else says it looks horrible because nothing aligns up properly. Not a good feeling when it looks so beautiful for yew. XD

    edit: thank you ;>

Oh kinda like the new YouTube or myspace profiles.. where your background can form the framework of your profile elements..

hmm.. don't know if that can be done on PC without some sort of backend code mods (which would break next time we updated)..

Guess its something to look into.. perhaps an additional css text box for custom css (within limits) or something

I know how to customize a profile on here, but I don't see the background image part that's in the "Main" part. Amidoinitwrong? XD
