Anime/Manga Death Note

Remember when this was a big thing? I recall watching the anime on Adult Swim but never to completion. I ended up dipping after...

Spoiler:

So many others in my circle stopped watching after that point. I admit I did too, but wanted to go back and rewatch it as an adult. Welll, I think it wasn't THAT bad as people made it out to be. So, anyone else have memories or so of watching or reading Death Note?

Death Note is excellent, but only if you can handle a dark storyline. I have changed as a person and no longer into tragedy, but still enjoy the battle of wits.

To NipahRika, if you've only watched the anime, I recommend reading volumes 7 through 12 (past the Yotsuba arc). The deductions are expanded upon and more enjoyable. The anime is a faithful recreation of the first part, but because the last part got the reputation you mentioned, the latter portion of the anime is abridged considerably. Plus you can savor the art in the manga at your own pace... 😄

Oh yeah, I only ever watched the anime back then. Makes sense though.

Like you said, though, the ending wasn't as bad as people said. I knew of the reputation when I finished reading it, so I was expecting the worst and was pleasantly surprised. It's not as flashy as Climax A, but at least the deductions leading to Climax B were impressive.

I saw in your profile that you like Danganronpa and Ace Attorney, so it seems that you really enjoy inverted mysteries and other detective fiction. I don't know if you've heard of Columbo but the tv show inspired Ace Attorney. I recommend "Any Old Port in a Storm" as a primer. But my favorite episode is "Forgotten Lady." 😊

I never grew up watching Columbo, but have heard of it. The other form of mystery I got into is whydunit thanks to Umineko.

Then you are luckier than I am, because you get to experience them for the first time. The good episodes, not the bad ones. 😝

Umineko is great. I think whydunnit is mainly an extension of the Victorian style of mystery, with greater emphasis on psychology. The motives behind the actions. The island in the ocean. I remember reading that Ryukishi07 wanted to take the mystery back to before the golden age, when there was a greater suggestion of the supernatural. Some mysteries even made the supernatural one of their core elements, but I can't name any of them because it would be a spoiler. Umineko is different in that the titles literally mention a golden witch - a declaration of the supernatural (not just a suggestion) - and it still functions as a proper mystery.

I feel like Umineko was the last like mystery thing which did surprise me. Heck, the most bare bones basic mystery thing I grew up with was...Scooby Doo. I think that show plus som Sherlock Holmes is what got me into stuff like Danganronpa, Umineko, Higurashi, etc... As far as Death Note goes I would love to see the series explored more, but guess gotta rely on fanfics and YouTube videos for that one.

Eh, it was something that I watched casually on Adult Swim back when I was still cutting my teeth in the anime fandom and wasn't nearly as selective as I am today. I remember being rather indifferent toward it and only half paid attention, lol

Nowadays, it wouldn't pass muster for me - too dark and edgy, not cute and relaxing enough for my current tastes.

It can't hold a candle to shows like Love Live or Non Non Biyori.
