[Rated T just in case. Right now this is set up to be a fairly short fic, but if it receives a 'warm welcome' then I may continue it on after the second chapter]

Chapter 1: Of Storms and Destiny

Shura trudged through the mucky grass just steps away from the edge of the forest. It was finally the day he had been waiting for his whole life. The day he was to get his first Pokémon from Professor Juniper. Unfortunately for Shura, map reading was not his forte.

He glanced down at the twists and turns on his Town Map, completely unable to decipher either where exactly he was or where he was meant to be going.

I probably should have paid more attention in that class after all…

To make matters worse, it was raining. No, pouring. And he had no umbrella. He was absolutely drenched. Shura's normally cottony jacket was basically sticking to his skin while his snowy white hair, which usually was neatly kept and fluffy, was now dripping water down his face.

Even with the rain, the thunder, the lightning, and the sogginess, Shura's hopes were not dampened. Sure he might have to pop inside the local Pokémon Center for a short while to dry off, but he was /still/ going to get his first Pokémon today. After all, Professor Juniper had assured him over the phone that there were plenty left if he got there today.

I wonder what kinds she'll have to offer—

His thoughts were interrupted by a momentarily flash of lightning followed by an ear-shattering crack of thunder. Shura jumped about as high as a Magikarp leaping out of the water. It wasn't that he was naturally afraid of loud noises, but /that/ one had caught him off guard.

It was then that he heard it. A shriek? No, a screech. A Pokémon's cry. Shura looked around worriedly. He had been told to stick to the main paths and to avoid the tall grass whenever possible as he had nothing to defend himself against wild Pokémon. But something didn't sit right in his gut; the Pokémon cried out again. Whatever it was, it was in trouble.

"H-hey! Who's there?!" Shura called out, his voice mostly dampened out by the howling winds.

Shura heard the cry once more, though it was definitely fainter that time and had a tone of desperation about it. Ignoring his parent's warnings, Shura darted off to his left into the tall grass towards whatever was making the sound.

    "I'm coming! Just hold on!"

He ran for about thirty seconds before he heard the cry once more, fainter still; but it was close, very close. Shura glanced to his right, then he saw it; sprawled out on the ground less than ten feet from him was a massive red Pokémon. It had a wingspan stretching longer than Shura's body length and brilliant red feathers coating its back and feathers. On its underside were dark blue feathers that were smaller than the ones on the wings. On the back of the bird Pokémon's neck was a large patch of fluffy feathers, almost like a mane, which was light tan in color. Lying on the ground in front of Shura was a Braviary.

Shura had read about all kinds of bird Pokémon, they /were/ his favorite after all, but he had never been this close to one this large before. He stood there awestruck for a moment, paralyzed with fear. This bird could easily snatch him up in its talons and carry him off for lunch. But then he noticed it. There was a large black patch of feathers on one of the Braviary's wings. It was horribly burnt and might have been broken. The large Pokémon turned its head to look up at Shura, its deep blue eyes deep with sorrow and anguish; it let out a croak of desperation.

Shura rushed over to it. He knew the Braviary needed to have medical attention immediately, but if he left it to go find help, he might not be able to find his way back if it was too weak to cry out once more. There was only one thing he could do.

"I need to get you to the Pokémon Center right away. Please don't try to attack me, I just want to help."

The Braviary kept staring at him for a moment then gave a slight nod, as if it had understood his words. Shura paused, considering this, then leaned down next to the eagle-like Pokémon and tried to hoist it carefully onto his back. This wasn't the easiest of tasks. The Braviary probably was close to his own weight and was very nearly as big. But somehow he did it.

Shura remembered seeing a Pokémon Center back in Accumula Town when he had passed through not that long ago. That was where he would head. Very slowly, he turned and trudged back in the direction he had come, the rain still beating down on his and Braviary's back. The eagle Pokémon laid its head over Shura's shoulder and occasionally looked up at him, though didn't utter another peep. "Just hold on, I won't let you fall."

The journey felt like it had taken hours. Along the way, Shura constantly whispered words of encouragement to the massive bird draped over his back. It never gave a response, but kept watching. Finally, Shura saw the large red building that was the Accumula Town Pokémon Center. He moved as quickly as he could into the building; luckily, it wasn't crowded.

Nurse Joy peered over the counter at him for a moment, then her eyes widened. "O-oh my! What happened?"

Shura was breathing heavily and struggled to get the words out. "He's wild…I found him…hit by lightning…hurt…"

Nurse Joy waved one of her hands and two Chanseys rushed towards them with a stretcher. Nurse Joy looked to them upon seeing the ghastly wound on Braviary's wing. "We have to hurry. Please move this Pokémon to the Emergency Room."

Shura lowered Braviary onto the stretcher with the upmost care. As soon as he had, the Chanseys rushed the wheeled stretcher back behind the counter and into a room that had a light over it with a white plus sign in the middle.

Nurse Joy looked at Shura once more before rushing off after the Chanseys. "We'll do our very best. Please wait here until we've returned. I'll keep you updated."

Shura nodded worriedly and moved over to a seat situated near the front entrance. He stared at the ground, the light above the Emergency Room turning red as the procedure began.

    [Thanks for reading!]

Well, that sure ended quicker than I expected! While far more than just an ambiguous "intro", I was just getting hooked when the chapter ended! Even if this fic ends up being on the short side, which is perfectly fine, I'm interested in whatever's coming next.

Technical question, Shura refers to Juniper as a male early on. Is that a typo? I would have thought that was just Sura incorrectly assuming Juniper was a male, but they talked over the phone, so I'm guessing either that's a typo or some other sort of continuity error.

Oh, whoops! Yeah, that was a technical error on my part, I'll fix it
