I ventured around the place I first caught my starter but all I found were Zubats, Pidgeys, Rattatas and one Caterpie.
I'm wondering if you venture further would you find rarer and less common pokemon?

In that case, perhaps we should download and login to Pokemon GO for the first time and catch our starter at some place that is far from home?

If you got to different areas you will find different Pokemon, for example if you went to a city you could find Magnemite or if you went to the beach you could find a Goldeen. There's no need to download it in a place far from home just keep searching new areas and you'll eventually come across different species :)

    thanks!
but my game now isn't showing pokespots at all...
    kinda worried

Servers are a bit all over the place at the moment, but don't worry it'll most likely be fixed pretty soon! But yes, much what ScoSap said. If you go anywhere near a big body of water, you're more likely to find water pokemon there, where if you go to forrests and parks, you'll find pokemon like caterpie, weedle and more bug and/or grass types. Zubat and golbat will also be more common at night time!

I have a buddy who got into the pokemon go beta he was telling me that not only does the type of area that you are in dictate the types of pokemone that show up (example: lakes/rivers/oceans have more water type, deserts have more fire types, etc) but that the weather and time of day go into the appearance as well,. not sure if this is the exact truth (my buddy exaggerates a bit some times) lol

Well, I don't know about deserts having more fire-type Pok?mon, mostly because I really don't know anyone who lives in arid climates like that. I can totally vouch for watery areas having more water-types though. I live next to a lake, and I've caught just about every single water type available now. In fact, I just go the silver medal for catching over 50 water-types... :x If only I liked them.

Don't know about weather either, but day/night definitely seems to make a difference too. I don't think I've run into a Zubat during the day-time.

As I was also a beta tester, myself and a few others tested for weather changes over a few weeks and it doesn't affect anything. Time of day does make zubat, drowzee and sometime abra come out more - but they've made zubat more common on the full release now so not sure if that works anymore.

    Gonna drop this video~
