Makes me wonder will Ash be able to beat Paul in one battle before they get to the Pokemon League. Ever battle Ash fought against him was either a tie or Ash lost.
It's suppose to make you think that. The writers want to make Ash the underdog that we are suppose to root for. Little do they realize half of the fans ARE Shinji fans.
Ash battles against Shinji would be loses, ties or simple get interrupted between now and the Shinou League. The showdown would be during the Shinou League. I think that if they both get beaten without facing each other, then there is a chance that Shinji will stick around in the anime after the Shinou League to settle their score.
