The Battle Factory's inability to give me Pokémon that don't totally stink has left me wanting a different challenge. I've been RNGing for various Pokémon, mostly because I think they're cool, but there are some viable Pokémon in there like Machamp and Swampert. Now I feel like I want to attempt to break a long streak in the Emerald Battle Tower. Here is the team I have planned.

Gyarados is not necessarily the lead; it's just the first Pokémon I decided to list for whatever reason. I do need help with the lead slot, so if anyone has suggestions, that would be great. I have considered all three Pokémon. Gyarados starts off the battle with Intimidate and threatens a clean sweep right away, Metagross has the most immediate power and resists a ton of attacks, and Swampert is a reliable bulky lead that counters the most threatening offensive Pokémon in the game, namely Tyranitar, Salamence, and Aerodactyl.

Gyarados @ Chesto Berry
Trait: Intimidate
EVs: 132 HP / 252 Atk / 120 Spd / 4 SDef
IVs: 31 HP / 31 Atk / 31 Def / 30 Spd / 30 SAtk / 30 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Dragon Dance
- Hidden Power [Flying]
- Earthquake
- Rest
Current status: EV trained, level 100
Gyarados is here as the primary bulky Water stopper. It can easily set up on weak Ice Beams and use Rest to heal itself. STAB Ice Beams hit a little harder, but that means that Metagross's Meteor Mash isn't resisted and HP Rock hits for supereffective damage, so it isn't a problem. The coverage granted by HP Flying and Earthquake is enough that Rest can be used without missing any coverage. I have considered Double-Edge in the fourth slot but decided against it since its immediate extra power is eventually weaker than Hidden Power Flying after two or three Dragon Dances. Gyarados is also good because it resists Fighting-type attacks and is my lone Fighting resist. Intimidate helps make those Rock slides hurt a little less. The item selection is tougher than it may seem. Lum Berry is useful against all status, but its early activation makes Rest a little more risky. I will also have to use Chesto Berry if I give Swampert a Lum Berry. I need help here. The EV spread lets Gyarados outspeed and OHKO all Sceptile that can appear in the Tower after a Dragon Dance so that he can KO them with HP Flying. Attack is maxed out for maximum power, and the rest is dumped into HP, which is great for surviving weaker unSTABed Electric attacks and tanking against Water-types. Gyarados is also the closest thing I have to a Dusclops counter since it doesn't mind Will-O-Wisp because of Rest. Gyarados takes the Fire and Ground attacks that hit Metagross for supereffective damage.

Metagross @ Choice Band
Trait: Clear Body
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spd
IVs: 31 HP / 31 Atk / 30 Def / 30 Spd / 31 SAtk / 30 SDef
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Meteor Mash
- Earthquake
- Hidden Power [Rock]
- Explosion
Current status: EV trained, level 100
Metagross is probably my favorite Pokémon introduced in Gen III, and it sure is a beast. I have used Metagross before but with worse IVs, and even then it was great. I'm rebreeding it for better IVs and for Hidden Power Rock, which won't have the accuracy woes that plagued Rock Slide. Metagross is a hard hitter but in a lot of ways it is a safety valve because of Explosion, which ends Pokémon that are traditionally win conditions in competitive play, especially CurseLax and CalmCune. Meteor Mash can be unreliable but its upside is huge, not just because of the huge base power but also because of the Attack boost chance. The other cool thing about Metagross is that it can stand in there and take any Earthquake in the game and then hit back, which makes its utility even greater as a "panic button." Also, since the Battle Tower isn't great with EVs, some slower Waters will actually lose to this set's Earthquake in three hits, and in a few cases, two hits. I also use this to beat Grass-types, especially the ones that carry ThunderPunch to kill Gyarados. Of course, Metagross is also useful for its plethora of resistances from its Steel typing, and it can take an Alakazam Fire Punch in a pinch if need be. It seriously is a great "panic button" Pokémon, you have no idea. The EVs help with this, giving Metagross maximum power and reasonable bulk at the same time. The spread is rather simple, but there is really no reason to make it complicated for a Pokémon as simple as Metagross. Metagross takes the Grass attacks that hit Swampert for supereffective damage.

Swampert @ Leftovers
Trait: Torrent
EVs: 240 HP / 140 Def / 124 SAtk / 4 SDef
IVs: 31 HP / 31 Atk / 31 Def / 31 Spd / 30 SAtk / 30 SDef
Relaxed Nature (+Def, -Spd)
- Earthquake
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Mirror Coat
Current Status: EV trained, level 100
Water-types dominate the Advance generation, so why not use two on one team? Swampert is the primary defensive Pokémon of the team, standing up to most physical attackers and beating them down. The item selection will probably be Leftovers to help Swampert's survivability, but I have considered Lum Berry for Pokémon like Gengar that could be bad news with Hypnosis. Any thoughts here would be great, but I'm probably just stuck in my Battle Arena mindset and should just use the Leftovers. At any rate, the last slot was a toss-up between HP Rock, HP Electric, and Mirror Coat. HP Rock is basically an inferior HP Electric since it's mostly for Gyarados anyway, and Gyarados can't overpower Swampert before Ice Beam kills it. Even if that does happen, my own Gyarados can finish the job. Mirror Coat is primarily for weaker Grass-type attacks as well as strong STAB special attacks like Latios Dragon Claw or Alakazam Psychic, and I figured that beating dangerous Pokémon like them was more important than nabbing a quick kill on Gyarados. Besides, the coverage of the other three moves is superb. The EVs let Swampert OHKO min/min Salamence 100% of the time. 401 HP lets Swampert survive four Seismic Tosses, five with Leftovers. The rest is put into Defense except for 4 SDef which is there because I'm a numbers freak. This is also faster than Rhydon and Donphan which is nice because they both hit pretty hard and can murder Metagross and Gyarados. Swampert takes the Electric and Rock attacks that hit Gyarados for supereffective damage.
So there you have it. All suggestions are welcome. Remember, I have access to just about everything you can imagine (my national dex is completed and all species are in Lanette's storage system), and I can and will RNG for just about anything, including the Regis and Lati@s. In fact, I'm just about ready to RNG for a Latias (or Latios, if you guys think it's better) in my other Emerald game, so I can use just about anything lol. I also have the three useful pinch berries, though I doubt I'll need them.
Thanks for reading!
