This is just a general discussion thread for bands of the Emo genre. It's alright if the band sounds Pop-Punk as long as it is Emo lyrically.
To start it off, I'll give my own little definition of Emo and a couple bands I listen to.

I'm guessing that the bulk of PC is new to the term Emo, and probably thinks they haven't listened to it. If you listen to Fall Out Boy, Green Day, Blink 182, or even My Chemical Romance, you've listened to music that is somewhat Emo.

Hawthorne Heights- Ohio is for Lovers

Emo- Short for Emocore, or Emotional Hardcore, which is what original Emo bands in the 80's-early 90's would call themselves. As Emo bands evolved through the 90's, many bands picked up Pop-Punk elements, and weakened or sometimes completely dropped the hardcore element. Although most bands would let up on the hardcore instrumentals, some would still scream during songs.

Post-Hardcore/Indie Emo- An Emo band that doesn't play as hard as the average Emo band and usually has their own independent style to make up for it. There is usually very little or no screaming in their music.
Saves the Day, The Getup Kids, Dashboard Confessional

Emo/Pop-Punk- Music that usually draws many elements from the punk genre, and who's lyrics do not represent rebellion or anarchy, but rather lyrics filled with emotion, or are emotively charged.
Blink 182, The Ataris, Matchbook Romance, Gatsby's American Dream

Screamo- An Emo band who has particular skill in screaming. Unlike screams from an Emocore band, a screamo band is usually high pitched and dominates all other sounds except for the lead singer's.
Hawthorne Heights, Silverstein, Scary Kids Scaring Kids

Emocore- Bands who intend to imitate the original 'DC' sound within their music, and are usually marked by very heavy drum playing and a deep screaming voice, often confused or mixed with grindcore, metalcore, or thrash. Some Emocore bands will not label themselves as such to evade being associated with scene Emo bands.
From Autumn to Ashes, Underoath(the first two CDs), City of Catipillar

Scene- Every genre of music has it's scene, but not every scene is from music.. A person within a scene usually dresses and acts differently to become part of it's 'in-crowd'.(there's always a group of people with no better reason to be at a gathering than to show off) Scene Emo people are usually identified by hair with long bangs, in their eyes at an angle, tight shirts(band shirts mostly), sometimes tight used sweaters, and extremely tight dark jeans. Not everyone who dresses this way is 'scene', but by consistantly wearing clothes that label a person emo, you may be falsely accused, or you may falsely accuse another person, which most fans don't care about, but some despise people there purely for the scene.
The 'classic emo look' borrows attributes from punk, gothic, and hardcore dress.

'Scene' can describe the gathering, or it can describe the groups of fakes that attend. Always pay attention to context to make sure you don't sound like an idiot using this word.

Some other bands that may be considered Emo, and are pre-approved to be discussed within this thread are:

A Change of Pace, Action Action, A Day In Black And White, Anberlin, Armor for Sleep, A Thorn for Every Heart, Alexisonfire, Alkaline Trio The Ataris, A Day in the Life, The Acadamy Is, The All-American Rejects, At The Drive In, Atreyu, Bayside, Bed Light for Blue Eyes, Bleed the Dream, The Bled, Bleeding Through, Blood Brothers, Boys Night Out, Blink182, Brand New, Billy Talent, The Beautiful Republic, Bullet for my Valentine, Catch 22, Chiodos, Circa Survive, Cobourg, Coheed and Cambria, The Chariot, City of Catipillar, Circle takes the Square, Copeland, The Cable Car Theory, Count the Stars, Death by Stereo, DeathCab for Cutie, Dim Northern Lights, Emery, Every Time I Die, The Early November, Fall Out Boy, Fear Before the March of Flames, Finch, Flashlight Brown, Funeral Diner, Funeral for a Friend, Further Seems Forever, From First to Last, From Autumn to Ashes, Greeley Estates, Gatsby's American Dream, Green Day, The Getup Kids, Halifax, Haste the Day, Hawthorne Heights, Hidden in Plain View, Hopesfall, Hot Rod Circuit, Hot Hot Heat, The Hurt Process, It Dies Today, The Jayden Sentence, Jimmy Eat World, The Juliana Theory, June, Kill The Man Who Questions, Letter Kills, A Love Ends in Suicide, Lost Love But Not Forgotten, Madison, Mae, Mates of State, Motion City Soundtrack, Matchbook Romance, Midnight Aria, Modest Mouse, My American Heart, My Chemical Romance, Nirvana (it's mockery to call one of the greatest GRUNGE bands in the world as "emo"), Noise Ratchet, Northstar, Norma Jean, Open Hand, The Pillows, Pretty Girls make Graves, The Postal Service, Poison the Well, Our last Night, Our Last Days as Children, Rise Against, Rites of Spring, Rufio, Saosin, Saves the Day, Scary Kids Scaring Kids, A Static Lullaby, Senses Fail, Seven Days of Samsara, Silverstein, Something Corporate, Sum41, Spitalfield, The Spill Canvas, Straylight Run, Starlight Mints, Story of the Year, The Starting Line, Stutterfly, Tears like Atreyu, Texas is the Reason, Taking Back Sunday, These Arms are Snakes, Thursday, Thrice, Tsunami Bomb, The Unseen, The Used, Underoath, Walls of Jericho, We Close our Eyes, With Broken Wings, Yellowcard, Yesterday's Rising, You and I, Your Eyes My Dreams, Zao

I listen to some Emo music, so do most of my friends. But you couldn't tell it by looking at us. I dislike when people wonder why you listen to music if you don't dress the part.

I listen to music with my ears, not my clothes.

I really don't like it when someone's into [insert genre here]'s scene whereas they where [insert clothing here] and act all [insert attitude here]. Everyone hates people that are just there to fake their position.

I remember back in Middle School when the big word was 'poser' for fakes out of the skateboarder crowd. :D
Every American teenage boy wanted to skate, or atleast wear skateclothes and hang around with them.
Now those same kids will show up at local shows even if they hate the band, just to hang out with 'Emo' kids.

Oh most deffentally Brittany. I love emo/screamo. Lately I've been listening to alot Of Boys Night Out, Underoath, A thorn For Every Heart, Funeral For A Friend, Fear Beofre The March of Flames, and From Autumn to Ashes, Armor For Sleep, The Promise Ring, Senses Fail,Saosin, Circa Survive There are TONS more many many many of the ones on your list. Over the past year my tastes have really devoloped from more of lighter mainstream emo like Fall OUt Boy and TBS to what I listen to now. Dont get me wrong, I still LOVE the less screamo stuff to wich is also more of the mainstream stuff. I mostly hang with the Emo crowd at school, but really to enjoy and appericate it you dont have to hang with a certian crowd. Alot of my love for the music comes from prior life experiances with the death of one of my closest friends.

PS- Brittany I've seen your tastes have vastly expanded since when we first met way back when. Its amazing the music that I've uncoverd in the last year or two. Heh I remember like a year ago when we where just talking about TBS like they where the greatest guys on earth.(Wich they still are, amunst many)

You know that Circa Survive's singer, Anthony Green, was Saosin's original singer until they briefly broke up? Before he joined back up with Saosin he decided to sing for Circa Survive, which is why they sound alot alike, aside from the instrumentals.

And Taking Back Sunday... still rules the world :D

I like Emo music alot, I am not a huge fan of Screamo, but I do like Hawthorne Heights (That screaming guy looks like he has down syndrome XD)

And you named one of my favorite bands: Gatsbys American Dream (Only got one of thier songs, but that just shows how much I like it for it to go above other bands that I have more songs of)

Also, would you really consider Green Day Emo? Maybe New Green Day But Not Older Green Day (Sorry to catagorize it like that, but older GD had more of a Punkish sound than Emo..)

There's a hint of emo, but it all really depends on the song. By no means has Green Day's music been 100% punk.

Nobody can ever truly rate 'how punk' something is, just because by rating how punk something is, you're doing something that's not punk- a 'true' punk shouldn't care.

Yeah I know, Anthony Green was so good In Saosin. I like the older Saosin with Green, Cove's voice isnt as unique and fitting for Saosin. But Im liking Circa Survive, so I guess its all pretty good.

Cove is good enough to emulate Anthony's style for their original songs in concert, but not talented enough for their new EP to match the old in my opinion.

I dunno, keep in mind this is just my opinion. But I just dont think he plays the role very well. Deffentally talented, just not as good.

Well, we all have different opinions on this kinda stuff anyway. I'm awaiting Underoath's new CD(whenever that's schedueled for release). Have you heard the song 'I got ten friends and a crowbar that says you ain't doing jack'?(if you haven't, it's at www.PureVolume.com/underoath) It's been on a Smartpunk compilation, but no others, so I wouldn't be surprised to hear many new Underoath songs going along those lines on their future CD.

Yeah, I havent seen them live though. So I dunno. And I've heard the song a few times on Launch, I can't specifically recall the song though. I know for a fact I've haerd it though. Today I've been Listening to alot of Roses are Red and the beautiful mistake.

Ps- Im checking out the song now. I deffentally like what Im hearing. Thanks :)

I like 300 Motion Pictures, best. When I was At boarders today I picked up the Funeral For a Friend EP 7 Ways to Scream your Name( I have Hours and the album before it) I also got To bad your beautiful- From Autumn to Ashes.

The last CD I have bought was the new Saosin EP at Warped Tour, which I lost a couple days ago >.>

I'm currently in the mood to always listen to From First to Last for some reason though, so I haven't been making very many trips to the music store.

I've been averaging about 2 CDs a week. How was the warped tour, I was so pissed I couldnt go this year, but I didnt even know who was going to be there its hits San Antonio really early and there supposedly wasnt as many good artists at the begining.

Well, this warped tour... was different

First of all, Story of the Year(of all bands) opened. And after them, was Senses Fail.
Now this seems great at first, but seriously, SotY opening? Last year they closed at warped tour!

They played Until the Day I Die, Athem of our Dying Day, and then a couple sweet new songs. Senses Fail was great, but people tried making a really big moshpit in the center and as they spread, people near the barricades moved even further up to evade it, and eventually we were all squished together. Atleast I found a wallet with $45 on the ground :D

After that, I saw Emery, which played on a really small stage. They had technical difficulties, so it took them a while to get going. They started off with songs off their new CD, but as they neared the playing of Walls, the crowd became extremely crazy. You know how there's usually a small group of people in a moshpit that do their thing while other's make a human wall around them to keep them in? Well this was like the opposite, there was a small pit of people trying to keep away from the moshers(which was basically everyone else in the crowd), and people on the edges of the pit tried to push them away from the crowd.

After Emery I saw Motion City Soundtrack, which rocks, and will always rock in concert. I don't think I've ever seen a band that can please the crowd so well. Oh yes, there seemed to be major marijuana smoking in the back of the crowd, but you're not interested in that mumbo jumbo :D

Hmm, after MCS was ATFEH, but their stage was closed(along with Boys Night Out!), so I saw Saosin. Saosin was clearly the band of the day at warped, and in my opinion, Cove did really well, but only on the songs that Anthony created. It started raining during Saosin, and people in moshpits went so crazy that I guess 5 people fell every other second. During Seven Years, I saw some girl get pushed into the pit, and then she tripped over a person that had already fallen, when she tried to get up, someone accidently kicked her in the face x_x
The moshpit kinda just erupted around me, so I was gripping to the edges of the crowd the entire time(really hard to make your way through anyway), so I pretty much got the best view of the kick too, which resulted in a bloody nose and lip. :'(

After Saosin was Hawthorne Heights, at the same stage, and they did better than I expected, but weren't extremely great. Then Funeral for a Friend which for some reason, didn't play Juneau OR Escape Artists Never Die.

Hmm, and then... I went home(4 hours early), because Boy's Night Out AND Circa Survive weren't playing(same stage), and I wasn't planning on wasting 3 hours in the rain to listen to Fall Out Boy and Thrice.

It had the potential to be my greatest Warped Tour, but due to technical difficulties, rain, and a wierd band schedule, it wasn't.

    You forgot weezer =[

I never considered green day emo, but meh

I really like Hawthorne Heights, FOB, and SoTY, and The Used is pretty good, now to go dl some of those bands posted =P

I like alot of Emo bands, like "The Used" "Jimmy Eat world", "My Chemical Romance", I just hate the way people who think theres this new omg style "EMO" and dress like complete insane idiots, its like..if its all so unique..then..err dearys why are you all doing it?

    *sighness*
