Okay, I don't really understand EV training...
From what I've heard, certain pokemon give EVs when you defeat them with experience (EG zubat gives 1 speed EV) but I really don't understand what happens with them from there.
People have said that for every 4 EVs you gain 1 stat point to whatever stat the EVs were for, but yet I just defeated around 20 or so goldeen (which apparently give attack EVs) and gained about 4 to my defense and one to my attack.

Can anyone explain this to me? I may be being silly, but it's really bugging me not being able to understand this! :P

I should also add that the pokemon in question (shieldon) is holding a macho brace and has pokerus. That should be around 4 attack EVs per goldeen (I fought 20 goldeens) :(((

Every 4 EVs in one stat will raise your stat by 1 point indeed, but this change is only noticeable at very high levels (and exact on Level 100 only). The stat you're training will raise considerably faster (and higher) than if not trained - that's why you'll only notice it on high levels.

With that setup each Goldeen does give you 4 Attack EVs per battle.

Rest easy - your EVs are taking effect. :)

    With that said above...

In the Pokémon Strategies and Movesets forum, there is a sticky called "Compiled Guides." In there, there's a thread that covers generally everything there is to know about EV training in the Fourth Generation. You can find the thread here, and the EV Training guide is the second post.

If you have any further questions about it, then feel free to ask your questions in the Simple Q&A thread.
