    Introduction

This guide will explain the meaning of Effort Values (EVs for short) and how to use them properly. A lot of trainers aren't aware of the importance of Effort Values and their effects on a Pokemon stats, so read this guide and find out what exactly EVs are. The Basics of EVs

Basically, EVs are gained in battle by defeating a certain Pokemon. Each Pokemon give a different amount of EVs which affect different stats. A single Pokemon can only gain 510 EVs, and one of their stats can only gain 255 EVs. So, take for example a Charmander with 255 EVs in Special Defense. That Charmander will have a lot more Special Defense than a Charmander with 0 EVs in Special Defense. Use EVs wisely and don't battle every single Pokemon that you run into in the wild just to gain experience if you really want to train a strong and serious team. Which Pokemon Give Which EVs

One way to determine which Pokemon give which EVs is to look at their base stats. If one of the Pokemon stats is way higher than the rest, then most likely it will give EVs in that stat. You're probably scratching your head now and going 'Huh?' To clarify, let's say we go flip through a Pokedex and land on Pikachu. For the sake of this guide, I'll give you Pikachu's stats:

    HP: 35
    Attack: 55
    Defense: 30
    Speed: 90
    Sp. Attack: 50
    Sp. Defense: 40

Obviously, Pikachu's speed is the outlier since it is almost 40 base stat points away from any other stat. Now you know that Pikachu will most likely give speed EVs, so if you want your Pokemon to be fast and gain speed EVs, just go out and look for wild Pikachu.

Another way to find out which Pokemon give which EVs is to just look it up on the Internet. You'll find one or two good places listing Pokemon and the EVs they give. You should always use this method, as the above one I just told you about isn't very accurate and you're taking a wild leap into guessing. But use it if you don't have such tools at hand or are just too lazy to go on the computer. :) Using EVs Wisely

Like everything in life, there is always a good way to do something and a bad way to do something and EVs is no different. While the concept must seem pretty simple by now, you still don't know the smart way of using EVs. If you really want you're Pokemon to be the best they can be, then read this section to learn how to use EVs to their full potential.

First thing you should know is, every 4 EVs you gain, your stats go up one. Pikachu gives you 2 speed EVs every time you battle it. So, if your stats were:

    HP: 90
    Attack: 76
    Defense: 64
    Speed: 80
    Sp. Attack: 81
    Sp. Defense: 62

And you battled 2 Pikachu's, thus gaining 4 EVs in speed, you're stats will now be:

    HP: 90
    Attack: 76
    Defense: 64
    Speed: 81
    Sp. Attack: 81
    Sp. Defense: 62

See how your speed increased one level for the 2 Pikachus that you battled? That means that by the time you have used up all your 510 EVs, the EVs that you gained for each individual stat should be able to divide by 4 evenly if you trained seriously. If you trained by 4 EVs every time, then you should have 2 spare EVs left over that you don't need.

Now, of course, don't do all this math and thinking in your brain. Get a piece of paper and mark every EV that you gained by battling each Pokemon. It's a lot of work, but it will be worth it and give you the upper hand in battle. EV Training Spots

Having trouble finding good places to EV train? Well, here's a list of spots that I would recommend:

    Sp. Attack EVs
    R/S: Spinda - Route 113
FR/LG: Gastly and Haunter - Pokemon Tower
    Emerald: Spinda - Route 113

    Sp. Defense EVs
R/S: Tentacool and Tentacruel - Water
FR/LG: Tentacool and Tentacruel - Water
Emerald: Tentacool and Tentacruel - Water Tricks Using EVs

If you have already started EV training after reading this guide, you will find out how painstakenly long it takes for your Pokemon to max out their EVs. A good way to speed up the process is by attaching a Macho Brace onto your Pokemon as a hold item. Macho Brace will allow you to gain double the EVs that you get in battle so it will only take half as long to max out your Pokemon's EVs. But there is a down side to it. Getting EVs will be faster, but your Pokemon's speed will be half of it's original stat. So if your Pokemon had 80 speed, then it will only have 40 in battle, so a lot of wild Pokemon will outrun you, but I think that little sacrifice is worth it. As soon as you detatch Macho Brace from your Pokemon, its speed returns to normal.

Another fast way to speed up the EV process is by buying vitamins: HP Up, Zinc, Iron, Carbos, Protein and Calcium. Each of these vitamins will give you 10 EV points in a stat, but you can only apply 10 vitamins to a Pokemon, so don't get your hopes up.

A good way to make sure that you haven't accidentally calculated wrong and left out a few precious EVs is to go to Slateport City and talk to a woman there. If your Pokemon has maxed out its EVs then she will give you an Effort Ribbon. After you have received the ribbon, feel free to battle whatever Pokemon you like to get to level 100 because their EVs won't effect you anymore since you've already gotten as much as you can get.

Now, after all the stuff about speeding up the EV process, what if you mess up during the EV process? Perhaps you misread an EV guide and are battling the wrong Pokemon for the wrong stat. No matter how stupid it sounds, it will happen to you sooner or later. So, how do we remedy it? By lowering your EV points for one stat back to 0 so you can start over and not waste an EV points. But how do you we do that? By using 6 berries different berries that lowe a different stat, called EV berries. Each berry will lower 10 effort values in a stat. Here is a list of the berry and the stat it lowers:
    • HP - Pomeg Berry
    • Attack - Kelpsy Berry
    • Defense - Qualot Berry
    • Speed - Tamato Berry
    • Sp. Attack - Hondew Berry
    • Sp. Defense - Grepa Berry
    Neat, huh? Closing

Well, this is the end of my guide and I hope that you have a much clearer understanding of what EVs are, what they do, and their impact in battle. After this guide, you can start bashing all of your friends over the link cable and conquer the Battle Tower. =O Happy EV training!
