How exactly do you EV train? I've played Pokemon for a very long time, but I'm new to competitive battling. I understand that you have to defeat a specific Pokemon to gain EV points, and once you have four of them you gain an extra stat point, but I'm not sure where to start... I play Pokemon: Heartgold if that helps in any way.

Also, I'm sorry if this is in the wrong board, I wasn't exactly sure where to post.

EV training is making a Pokemon more powerful in a certain stat. EV means Effort Values. They called this because of the effort you put in to special training.

It works like this: when you beat another Pokemon, your Pokemon gets 1-3 points. These are called Effort Values, or EV's. Each Pokemon gives a different type(s) of points (usually the stat they are best in). For example, an Alakazam would give three points in Sp.Attack, whereas a Machamp would give three in Attack.

Each Pokemon gets a maximum of 510 EV's. But since this number is not divisible by 4, there are two EV's that will be unused when you complete your training. Which means you can EV train two stats by 252. The other points are unnecessary.

Now as of where to start I suggest you practice raising one stat. Get a Practice Pokemon and EV train him in one stat. Once your done you'll notice a huge change in the stat you trained him in. Hope I helped. ^_^ Any questions you want me to answer?

So I'll have to just keeping defeating armies of Pokemon to gain EV points? When should I stop EV training a Pokemon?

Well not actually, each Pokemon gives a certain EV stat. I'm sure you know this. There are also items that can help you such as, Macho Brace (It doubles any EV's you receive from the Pokemon you defeated) And also the Power Items:

    Power Weight: HP
    Power Bracer: Attack
    Power Belt: Defense
    Power Lens: Sp. Atk
    Power Band: Sp. Def
    Power Anklet: Speed

Each adds 4Ev's to a different stat. It's to help you EV train faster and trust me it'll take a quite abit of time.

At most you can train two stats. It's up to you to decide which one you want. Each stat can only reach a maximum of 255 EV points.

Also you might find this helpful:

These are locations of Pokemon of give certain EV's.

Hit Point EVs - Celadon City
    *Requires Surf
    -Grimer (1 HP)

Starting from the Pokemon Center, go down past the Game Corner, and West until you see 2 pools of water in front of the house with the old man standing outside. Surf in the water and you'll see tons of Grimer and the very rare Muk.

    Attack EVs - Cerulean City
    *requires Surf
    -Goldeen (1 Atk)
    -Seaking (2 Atk)

Go north and cross the Nugget Bridge, then Surf along the water toward Cerulean Cave. You'll see nothing but Goldeens and Seakings so go nuts.

    Defense EVs - Blackthorn City
    -Geodude (1 Def)
    -Graveler (2 Def)

From the Pokemon Center, just go south to Route 45, run in the grass, and beat up alot of Gravelers and Geodudes.

Special Attack EVs - Vermillion City
    *Requires Surf
    -Psyduck (1 Sp.Atk)
    -Golduck (2 Sp.Atk)

Just go north to Route 6 (between Vermillion and Cerulean) and Surf in the little body of water to your left. 90% of the time, you'll see Psyduck. Train until your heart is content.

Special Defense EVs - Cianwood City
    *Requires Surf
    -Tentacool (1 Sp.Def)
    -Tentacruel (2 Sp.Def)

From the Pokemon Center, just go east and jump right in the ocean where our little jellyfish friends enjoy gathering.

    Speed EVs - Violet City
    -Zubat (1 Spd)

There are tons of place where you can train in Speed, but the easiest by far is near Violet City in the Dark Cave. Go east from Violet City, walk inside.

Thanks, this is really helpful. But, when should I stop EV training? Do I keep training until Level 100?

Well once you reach your EV limit which is 510 EV points you'll basically be finished. Going to level 100 is just an awesome perk. ^_^

Thanks a lot! You've really helped me. But I have just two last questions. How does Pokerus affect EVs? And where can I find those items?

Well Pokerus doubles whatever EV you get from the Pokemon you fought. So if you defeat a Pokemon with 2 Atk EV's then Pokerus would double it to 4 Atk EV's. And you can get the items at the Battle Frontier (In HGSS) With BP you earn.

Thanks a lot! This is all I need to know!

No problem! Glad to help! If you need to know anything else or need help let me know. ^_^

Well, I have a question related to EV training. Does it matter what level a pokemon is at? Let's take a pokemon with no evolutions for example. Let's say I have a lvl.1 Pachirisu that I am trying to EV train and bring to lvl.50. I:
    A) EV train it from the beginning and then level it up through battling
    B) Put it in the Daycare until it is level 45, EV train it, and then level it the rest of the way through battling
Will those two methods have the same result in the end, or will there be a significant difference?

Providing that you battle the same Pokémon for identical EVs in both scenarios, then it wouldn't matter.

I've got another question. If I send out my first pokemon, and then switch it with the second pokemon, and the second pokemon defeats the wild pokemon, will the first pokemon gain EVs?
