Ok, I have been playing Pokemon for a quite a while now, but I never understood EVs and IVs. Can someone please help me understand what they do?

EVs are Effort Values. Each Pokemon that participates in a battle gets a set number of EVs based on what Pokemon you beat. For example, beating a Starly gives you 1 Speed EV. EVs go into individual stats and determine stats. 4 EVs = 1 extra stat point in said stat. 510 EVs on a Pokemon max, each stat can have a max of 255 EVs in a certain stat.

IVs are Individual Values. Nothing at all you can do to change these and they range from 0-31. These are mainly used for Hidden Power, but they also determine stats. A Pokemon with 0 IVs in a certain stat will have a lower stat at level 100 as opposed to the same Pokemon with 31 IVs. So, if a Pokemon were to have 0 IVs in Attack and have a stat of 300 Attack at level 100, a Pokemon with 31 IVs trained the same way, would have an Attack stat of 331.
