Heya, so I've started reading up about EVs, I'm not 100% sure yet so I have a question.

I am going to level up my Tynamo and will boost its Special Attack EVs. I plan to do so in Celestial Tower, with the help of an Exp. Share until its a little higher. I'm told this place gives good Special Attack EVs so that isn't the problem.

My question is, how many Pokemon must I kill before I can stop worrying about EVs? I am not 100% sure on how it works yet so bear with me. I understand the 255 cap thing for each stat and 510 overall (?), does this mean I must kill either 255 of the relevant Pokemon - less with the Macho Brace - or am I wrong?

    Any replies appreciated, cheers.

You have most of it down! Killing a Pokemon will always give the same amount of EVs, which you can find on places like Bulbapedia. Since you're going to Celestial Tower, I assume you're fighting Litwick and Elgyem, as they're all you find in there. :P Each one gives 1 Special Attack EV, so if you're doing it via Exp. Share yes, you'd need to kill 255 of them to fill up Sp. Atk., unfortunately. However, after a while your Tynamo should get high enough level that you can do it alone, and at that point you can use another item that boosts EV gain, making it faster. I would recommend only doing 252 EVs though, since every 4 accounts for a stat increase so the last 3 will be wasted.

Another tip for Sp. Atk. in particular - There's a nurse in Celestial Tower. Try training near her so you can just use her instead of having to go all the way to the Pokecenter every time :)

Thanks a lot for the reply, helped a lot. Also the nurse idea is a good one, didn't think of that up until now!

My main worry was if it took, for example, 15 Pokemon to level up, I was worried only the first 4 would count (as I understand I'd need 4 EVs to gain one extra point without an item up to yet). So it would take considerably longer. But it seems that is not the case so I'm quite relieved.

I guess I need to find a way to tally the amount of Pokemon I have killed so I don't go under or over the required amount. Thanks for your input and if you or anyone else has any further advice I'd be thankful!

    Cheers.

Cartoon below will solve your problem about EVs in general. (as stupid as it is)

    Spoiler:

Different pokemon give out different amounts of EV. For example Psyduck gives out 1 special attack EV, but Golduck gives out 2 special attack EV. If you know how much EVs the pokemon that you're training on has, then you can calculate how much you need to train on.

Thanks, the cartoon helped as did your words. My only remaining question is, do I have to actually count the amount of Pokemon I have killed in order to be sure of hitting this 252 without going over?

Also, I do presume it means I have to kill this amount of Pokemon in total right? Not 4 every level. So even if I've only gone up a few levels and have killed the correct amount, it will still reward me with the correct EVs. And I can go and kill whatever I want after I have earned all 510? Presumably meaning I can't use it for simply leveling wherever I choose during this process?

You have to count the Pokemon, yes. Just write down each time you've beaten a Pokemon in notepad or somewhere else. But yes, you can kill whatever you want after the required amount, and since evs are calculated after each battle and not during the level up, it doesn't really matter how much your stats have changed by the level up.

Either way, if you have any further questions, you could ask in our quick questions sticky, or have a look at the FAQ (I linked the part concentrating on ev training), which gives you basically the same information as everyone else here, but with sprites and some extra info on what items you can use. :)
