Exploration-styled Hack

Something cool I'd like to see is a hack based completely on exploration. There wouldn't be TOO much story, pretty much just a reason for the player to go to this newly discovered region with little, if any, human inhabitants. It'd be all wild Pokémon and barely traversed terrain. The player would start with a little freedom, maybe in a make-shift camp used by explorers, possibly hired by a company sponsoring the venture. They would be given a starter Pokémon and able to explore the nearby areas where they would find an HM (or if possible, the first part of an HM replacement system) that allows more exploration.

As the area would be newly discovered, there wouldn't be a Town Map in the game, but maybe some kind of map that gets updated after an area is "finished." In addition to simply traveling around and catching the native Pokémon, the player would find different artifacts that hint to a past civilization and learn about the island's lore. The only place to shop would be the starting camp where the player can also get paid for discoveries and buy more Pokéballs and other items. The main feature would be the exploration and progress would depend on solving natural puzzles.

There could be many different kinds of natural secrets, like a spring that heals Pokémon, a cave with many fossils, etc. Since there wouldn't be too many NPCs, the main issue would be the amount of trainer battles. Maybe there would be a rival group of explorers that are scattered around and even a few random people that are also there for adventure?

It'd be a short game, but it might be a different enjoyable xperience than the main series.
