Ive spent time wondering this and it seems like the right place to start, In all pokemon games they either start you off with a fire, grass, water type pokemon, but do you really think its fair?Sure it apply's greatly to gym battles and rival battles, but all in all the normal trainers you fight have the most common pokemon in the beginning, But yet you have a rare pokemon so easily? To me it seems unfair but also what kind of game would it be without the starters right? it'd boring to just go catch a pidgey or starly you can get almost anywhere. Starters are also your basics and help most of the time, and really start the game off. There called starters for a reason right~?
Teeheehee~ Whats your opinion on this?

(I give credit to Pokemon Yellow For starting you off as pikachu since you face brock as your first gym leader~ but i disagree to giving you all the starters)

They're rare because they're starters. And you get them easily because a Professor gives them to you.

The starters are great Pokémon to have, knowing they are unique in the game as well as a good source to turn to in battle. Everyone has their own personal opinions on them, such as what they may or may not like about each region's starters as well as how well they might play off for them in the game. As for me however, I enjoy starters, but sometimes a little mix up, [Such as in Pokémon Yellow] is a nice change every once in a while.

As for your main question though, I do think it is pretty fair to have one of the starters from the beginning of the game. Sometimes, it even turns out that we aren't the only trainers in the game with one of them as well.

I understand your point Dearii~ thats the purpose of the thread, for people to discuss there own ideas of it~ It is nice to mix it up sometimes~ and indeed some trainers do have starters but Not a whole lot of them. This isnt a question for me, but for others and there own ideas of it~ [ Pokemon Yellow did have a nice mix~ it was a pretty good game~]
indeed some trainers do have starters but Not a whole lot of them.
which also brings up if there starters why don't most trainers have them if there starters?

I apologize if i sound prissy or something i mean this in a nice way~

No, not really... I would enjoy it more if the storyline was changed a bit. Eg. the PROF gives a pokeball and a ticket to go to another region and catch a starter. like a magby. or elekid. everyone likes those.

i think that it should be changed in future gamefreak games. :D

sorry, but it's my opinion ;)

I get what you're saying...all starters will become solid, strong pokemon all-around when fully evolved, yet the rattatas and pidgeys that the early-game youngsters and lasses seem to start with will never become nearly as strong...

But, in a way, isn't that what makes these games fun for the players? XP

The starter Pokemons are crucial for the main game play, in fact your respective game rival will take a type that makes your adventure longer and harder to beat. The Pikachu in Pokemon Yellow was nice, however personally I prefer that the player should choose between a certain type of Pokemon. The starter pokemons also grow up with the trainer, like Ash and Pikachu in the anime series, sharing their adventures in a fantasy world where the pokemons do exist. They have many nice and interesting features, like type-only attacks, three evolution levels and usually they look "special" within the Party. I think the idea to keep 3 types in the start could have come from the 3 basic elements (and pokemon types) Fire, Water and Gaia. However I think it should have been Fire, Water and Earth but the game play would have been slightly different. So I believe the starter Pokemons are fair and suitable for the game play. Unless it is like Pokemon Yellow, where you are restricted to an particular type of pokemon since the start, without having the freedom to choose.

Personally I really like the starters usually. My favourites are probably the one's in the Johto Region - like Cyndiquil and Chikorita. They really help you start off the game and are nice and rare. If I had a choice though I would like to have Eevee as a starter, cos then I can evolve it into an Espeon xD

I, myself, am wondering where the professors suddenly found these things. A "freshly caught" Cyndaquil, Chikorita, and Totodile? Where the hell did you get them from?

As for your main question though, I do think it is pretty fair to have one of the starters from the beginning of the game. Sometimes, it even turns out that we aren't the only trainers in the game with one of them as well.

For example Flint has an Infernape, Theres a girl in Crystal who has a Bulbasaur [Don't know if this counts] and I'm pretty sure you come across someone with a Prinplup/Piplup [vague memory]

I think this is like the assumption that there is only one legendary, which I read in another thread.

Also it gives you [most of the time] a type advantage against at least one of the gyms and maybe an Elite 4.

    Sure, why not =)
of course it's fair, I think it's cool to be different from the rest of the trainers
