Allright, soo I've been a pretty big pokemon fan for a long time, I think I've done close to everything I would want to do, but I've been more intrested now in these games then ever do too a few of my friends.

Sorry, I'm making this a long story, but w/e.

Last Friday me and my two best friends were talking trash about who is the best pokemon trainer haha so we decided to all restart FR/LG versions and have a little contest.

We made some rules, and off we're going.
Every Friday we're going to battle each other, and we don't really know what the end goal is, I guess it's beating the E4 twice.

Anyways, we aloud to trade some pokemon over so we could go through the game, but we didn't say which starter we chose or if we're going to use them at all.

Due to my friends having to trade me which ones they wanted I know a few of there teams, which kind of helps.

    Here are all our teams.

    Mine:

    IVYSAUR
SLOWPOKE (he was the only one I traded from another game unlike my cheap skate friends!)
    PIKACHU

    Friend #1 Eric

    Squirtle
    Charmander
    Bulbasaur

I don't know his other three. I guess I might know friday for our first battle

    Friend # 2 Sean

    Dratini
    Ghastly

I think he chose squirtle not sure though, I'll find out friday :D

Yeah and those cheaters also traded over TM's and Nuggests to boost there money right off the bat where alls I took was a crappy slowpoke haha.

So finnaly getting my dilema, I would say I'm the best out of us 3 at pokemon, where they don't know to much about IV's EV's or natures, where I have done my research on that. I usually like to try new pokes every time I go through the game, that's why I grabbed Slowpoke.

So I'm not to confident on who I want the rest of my team to be.. It's not going to be a competitive team really, but I do want to beat my friends >:D

So I haven't really chose any other pokes, but I was trying to decide between Dugtrio and Rhydon.

Also I was thinking about kangaskhan or a maybe a Muk since I have never used them, I just hate getting pokes at level 20 + when I first start training them.. it just bugs me.

So with me choosing rhydon/dugtrio I would have:

    Ivysaur Grass/Poison
    Slowpoke Water/psychic
    Pikachu Electric
    Dugtrio/Rhydon Rock/Ground

any suggestions? I really want to use a poke I haven't before but I want a nicely balanced team..

Or just give me a type of poke, and I will list some of the ones I haven't used.

THis is a very long post for something so silly, but the help would be much appreciated :)

I can help you, but you really need to reconsider your team first. You made the first right move in selecting Bulbasaur, as Venusaur will come in very handy. Personally, I would surround Venusaur with the following:

    Aerodactyl
    Vaporeon
    Snorlax
    Alakazam
    Muk

This will require some breeding to maximize the potential of your team. If you are willing to breed, let me know and I will continue on with Natures, EV spreads, and movesets. If not, I won't waste my time and will just suggest using those Pokemon and to provide them with the best moveset possible, focusing on making each one as versatile as you can. Remember to avoid HMs (except Surf).

    Good luck.

If I'm going to be making a team with max EV's and all that fun stuff that would be great, but I'm just going to be going through the game, not to like go all out..

What would Vaporeon be? A special Sweaper? I've never used any of the Evee forms, so I was cosidering Flareon. Are Jolteon and Vaporeon generally the better Evee forms? and if so, why is that?

If you are serious about wanting to lay a serious beat down on your friends, then I would HIGHLY suggest that you don't use any of those Pokemon while you are completing the storyline and then breed for them later. This way you can get the proper EV spreads and the right moves, which some will require breeding. Rare Candy farming with Meowth will come in very handy too, so don't forget to do that.

For EV training, I have a list of the best natural Routes to maximize each stat. I can give that to you later, once you are ready for it.

Vaporeon is definitely the best out of the three (Umbreon is the best out of the five) mainly because of its high HP and SAtk, along with a very good moveset that will really be a great help to your team. Stay away from Flareon. Bad type, bad stats, bad movepool. Enough said.

Once you are ready, let me know and I will provide my suggestions for your team.

Yes, your Vaporeon could be used as a special sweeper, but due to its tremendous special defense, I would mainly use it as a wall. Jolteon is good with a Rain Dance setup. Since you have already chosen a Slowpoke, you could lead off with that Pokemon. Use Rain Dance, then immediately switch out to your Jolteon where you could spam Thunder without the risk of missing.

Although, I personlly enjoy using fire types on my team, I would not recommend using Flareon. Not only is it weak in defense and special defense, it is slow in terms of speed. Do not use it.

Once you get to Lavender Town, do the storyline 'quests' immediately. Once you get the PokeFlute, you can use it on a Snorlax. I would most definitely catch this Pokemon.

Also if your planning to go as far as the Sevii Islands, I would recommend catching a Larvitar - You could raise this with specific EVs and IVs to make it even more a beast than it is.

Good luck with your training and your battling; hopefully you will win.

JD, thanks. That helped, It just I've used snorlax so many times, I've gotten sick of it. I'd like to think this is my last play through of this game, so I'm trying to try out all the pokes from the original 1-151.

I went with duggy. I'm happy. My friends are pretty much total noobs, so I think I can win :)
They don't believe in natures or IV's or EV's. I wouldn't be surprised if there water pokemon only know water moves ect.

    Here is a quick update:

I just got through the dark cave, and battled my rival in the lavender town haunted house place.

3 badges. I've got to go get the fourth though slowpoke won't listen since he is a traded pokemon :/

    Venusaur lvl 32
Pikachu lvl 32 (going to evovle after level 41 once she gets thunder, and I'll probablly rain dance my slowpoke)
Slowpoke lvl 31 (back burner till I get the 4th badge)
    Dugtrio lvl 32

I love duggy so far I taught him rockslide in the dark cave, now I just need to get him leveled for EQ.

I'm pretty pleased with how high my pokes are for this part of the game,

Oh last bit here, I caught two meowths a long time ago, for HM slaves until I get the rest of my pokes figured out which since I've never used Hitmonlee, I might go for him.

    Loot with Meowths:

    4 Rare Candies
    2 Nuggest
    TM 10 - Hidden Power
and like 15 berries. It's sooo awesome having them!

    Too Shane
once I finish the game, which should be in a week or two, I'd like you to give me those moves and stuff. I've never fully made a team for battling, I was close on diamond and pearl, but I want to make a beast team >: D

I'm not a total noob, and I pick up on stuff very quick. Thanks for the replies~

Glad to help. The unfortunate thing is that you used Rock Slide on Dugtrio. That is the perfect move for Aerodactyl, since it gets STAB and a 30% Flinch rate is great considering how fast it is. I guess I should have warned you earlier not to use any of the TMs or MTs on your in-game Pokemon. Hopefully you have access to Rock Slide (Emerald perhaps?) without having to start your game over.
