I've just recently bought a copy of Ruby on ebay and I wanted to get some opinions on the Pokemon I should use in my team.

I want to make a team of 4 to 6 Pokemon with 2-3 HM slaves.

What are your favourite gen 3 Pokemon? Which one's would you recommend I use?

Which starter do you suggest? I am leaning towards Treecko (sp?).

Oh and yes, I know I'm a bit late to the R/S/E party XD

    Thanks in advance!

It's late and I don't feel like recommending in detail, plus I'm moving this to the in-game help section. Here are some suggestions, but it's up to you to make the final decision, assuming you start with Treecko of course:

Ninetales, Skarmory, Manectric, Wailord, Milotic (really hard to get though), Swellow, Alakazam, Rhydon, Aggron, Vileplume, Bellossom, Cradily, Armaldo

Personally, I prefer Blaziken(Torchic) as a starter. For one thing, it's the ONLY decent Fire-Type in the game. If you don't choose Blaziken, then you're stuck with Numel(Camprut), Slugma(Macargo), Torkoal, and Vulpix(Ninetails) for Fire types. Only Vulpix is decent. And you don't get those until Firey Path and Vulpix till Mt. Pyre.

My favorite team so far consisted of Blaziken, Swellow, Sharpedo, Flygon, Manectric, and Gardevoir. Of course, your team is really up to you.

Personally, when it comes to the thrid gen starters, I tend to just poick w/e my mood decides. Most the time though I guess I go with Treecko, because his second stage is pretty cool for a grass pokemon lol. But if you looking for performance with Mudkip or Torchic will do you find

For an HM slave, I recommend picking up a Zigagoon/Linoone, fair enough move pool that includes a good number of HMs (Surf, Cut, Strength), Rock Smash plus the Pick up Ablitiy is a nice addon. Wailmer and Wailord make good HM slaves as well, if I recall they can learn Surf, Dive, Waterfall, Strengh and Rock Smash.

Now as for actual Pokemon to use, if you went with Mudkip or Treecko as a starter, i recommend Ninetails as your Fire Pokemon, if you feel like taking the time out, bread one to know Faint Attack to give its move pool that little extra.
Aside form this I can only recommend Aggron out of personal preference, when it came to the Hoenn region it always took me a while to find a full team I was comfortable with

Thanks for the suggestions! I did pick Treecko and I am definitely going to use Swellow and Aggron. Haven't decided on the rest as yet.

Fire types arn't realy a nessesity you know.Seeing how most of the game has water pokes and theres team magma who resist Fire. For fire type moves you could use Weezing with Fire Blast,Shadow Ball,Sludge Bomb,Toxic.A real Boss killer and does neutral damage to everything.

    Blaziken/Cacturne/Gyrados/Swellow/Flygon/Kadabra(Alakazam) Offence Team

    Swampert/Cradily/Torkoal/Skarmory/Gardavoir/Weezing Defence Team

    Sceptile/Altaria/Manetric/Starmie/Ninetales/Linoone SPeed Team
