I was just wondering ( since I am getting Heart Gold on day one but do not own DP or Platinum ), can I capture Pokemon from the 4th generation in this game without the need of trading?
Eh, shouldn't you of posted this in the Help Thread? Oh well, and yes I believe that there are only a small handful of 4th Gen. Pokemon that you cannot catch, such as the starters and the 'fossil' Pokemon and some legendaries

You can catch some 4th gen Pokemon before getting the national dex as they are part of evolutionary families. But other then those limited ones you need to get the national dex to get the rest minus the ones not in the game so you will still need to trade to get most of them. Here is a bit of info about the games which should help https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/Heart_gold_soul_silver
You can get a few 4th Generation Pokémon from Sinnoh in the games without trading, and there is a couple of ways to do it. First, like in DPPt, there are swarms of Pokémon and a couple of them are from Sinnoh. You can read more about it here. The other option is listening to the Pokémon March station on the radio in the PokéGear on Thursdays. It will be playing Sinnoh Sounds and while you have this playing as you search the areas for Pokémon, a 4th Generation Pokémon may appear. For more details about this you can read about it here. These are basically the two other ways to get Sinnoh Pokémon in the game without trading. Keep in mind however, these techniques will only be viable after obtaining the National Dex. Apart from what others said above, these are the only ways to do it.
... but yes, for any future questions you may have it is best you use our HG/SS Help Thread sticky next time. :3
