Getting non-hidden abilities when breeding

    So, I read somewhere that the ability a Pokemon will be born with is totally random, unless you're breeding for hidden abilities, which I'm not. Well, I've been breeding to get a Chansey with Natural Cure, and the past 15 eggs I've hatched have all been Serene Grace. Is there something more to it, or am I just unlucky?

    There's no such thing as a male Chansey.

    Undertaker, what ability has the mother got and is it holding any items?
     
    In that case I think the 80% rule applies, in which case you may have just been unlucky. Keep trying, there is approximately 20% chance for the offspring to have an ability that is different to that of the mother.

    It might even be worth taking the Everstone off until you have the desired ability. I was having a similar issue. I'd hatched near twenty Pokemon and no luck. It took me less than that to get another with the nature I wanted after removing the Everstone. Luck wasn't on board ability-wise, I guess.

    I don't think the Everstone should have any impact on what ability is passed down. If you already have the desired ability, definitely keep the Everstone; if not, dump it, but it shouldn't make any difference. Ultimately, it just comes down to luck. I recently went through two boxes of Pokemon to get one with the ability I wanted (again, non-HA).

    UndertakerFreak, do you have a Pokemon Bank subscription? If you do, you can easily rack up enough bp to just get an ability capsule and save yourself the trouble (since you're not going for HA).
