i want to know what i can do to increase my pokemons happiness and how to check how happy they are?

    Depends on the version.

    Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald
To check: In Verdanturf, there's a house in the south where a woman sits with a Pikachu. Talk to her, and she'll be able to give you a rough idea as to how happy your Pokemon is. The more she gets excited about seeing your Pokemon, the happier it is.

To increase happiness: Feed your Pokemon Pokeblocks of a flavor it likes. (You can find out which flavor it likes the most by taking it to see a man in one of the houses in Mossdeep.) Also, the usual -- give it items, have it win battles, keep it in your party, have it hold the Soothe Bell.

    Fire Red/Leaf Green
To check: Use an item (non-TM/HM) on your Pokemon, and don't skip past the part where it shows the sprite of your Pokemon and the item being placed on it. The closer the sprite comes to you before it gets the item, the happier it is. Three times means it probably can't be any happier.

To increase happiness: See above, but forget the part about Pokeblocks (because Pokeblocks don't exist in FrLg). Also, Daisy in Pallet Town can pamper your Pokemon (if I recall correctly) to increase happiness the way she did in GSC.
