Has the formula gotten better since the Original series?

I know for me at least the original series was fun in the day but it lacked good story. When Ag came along the battles got better and the story was build in a different way. Once DP was born they jumped into the story and made it seem battles were something out of DBZ at times. With BW they seemed to have fused story elements from DP with the AG battles. How to others like the new formula from the days of seasons 1-5? Just curious on views.

The formula seems to be ever evolving(no pun intended) as the Series continues through out the years. In Kanto it was the beginning of a Journey Ash was just starting out and absolutely didn't know what the heck he was doing evident in him losing a number of gym matches and the lack of control over Charizard initially. In Johto it at least to me seemed more focused on the Adventures and traveling of a trainer and all the joys of traveling and getting to know people(although this happens in every Saga). Hoenn seemed to show a beginning of maturation of Ash as a Trainer and mentor as well as the start of a journey for May and the introduction of contests. Sinnoh seemed to be more focused on the battle aspects evident of strategies like Counter Shield(irrc). It also seemed to focus on bonds with Infernape being the catalyst of these bonds. It stressed the friendship between pokemon and there trainers. Unova I can't really time what formula they are trying to go with, my guess is new beginnings like with the game. Which kind of explains why he and Pikachu seemed to be nerfed more then previous Sagas. They did change the formula with Team Rocket as well maybe indicating new beginnings as well, but with an exit at the end of the Saga...
